Review 6: Hector: Badge of Carnage - Episode 1: We Negotiate with Terrorists

A game which can be completed in 2 hours and doesn't even have a real ending doesn't sound like a rave review. But this game is much better than its short duration and episodic nature suggests.

When I started gaming the Sierra adventure series (*Something* Quest parts 1-27) were pretty much my favourite genre, as a purist I got grumpy when they removed the typing interface and make it all point and click, but in my old age I have mellowed and found an appreciation of the click and point adventure game.

Hector (of the many subtitles) is a fine addition to the stable and is squarely aimed at my generation which grew up trying to stop King Grahame falling into the moat of his own castle, and now 20 years later have an appreciation for the more adult humour behind a foul mouthed drunken British cop whose office is one of the cells at the station.

It is rare that a game makes me laugh out loud yet Hector has several moments of this quality. Even when you have figured out the puzzles, make sure you click on the hints button as the tirade of cockney abuse you will be subjected to for asking makes any embarrassment you would have if it were a genuine "help im stuck" moment disappear instantly.

Buy it now, because this is exactly the sort of quality over quantity independent game we should support over another Mario Call of Fortune Racer Craft sequel which does nothing new but beat on your graphics processor a bit harder.

p.s. yes I am well aware I am barely keeping ahead of 1 review per month let alone 1 per day.
