Alice in Wonderland 2010
Oh what a frabjuous movie.
Tim Burton has shown himself to be the great social commentator of our time with his Alice in Wonderland movie.
Naturally produced by Disney and whilst a little darker than the average House of Mouse film still has a PG rating to get in the kiddies and teach them important aspects of life.
Important things like how the disabled and deformed are all evil. Red Queen is a poor hyrdocephalic, Stayne is missing an eye, the Queen's entourage all have great deformities.
Beautiful people are of course good, Alice is gorgeous, the White Queen has an etheral beauty and even The Mad Hatter (who is shown to be not that mad so not really disabled) only looks fanciful and wierd but still has plenty of Johnny Depp sex appeal smouldering in there.
Even when we get to the final show down it turns out it is the perfect and immaculate vorpal sword vs the hideous jabberwocky.
This is also reflected in the real world, where Alice's betrothed is an ugly ginger who suffers from a digestive illness is of course a rude boorish jerk.
It also gets in on the race debate and shows how White is right. Now of course there were no actual black people in the film, I think the last time one of them managed to sneak into a Tim Burton flick was when he could dress them as apes. But note the White vs Red war of Wo(U)nderland, the second most used colour on the red side was black and a good deal of it too, with lots of emphasis on shadow and darkness vs the shining good white side.
Back in the real world the only two characters presented in a positive light besides the very blonde white Alice are her father and his business associate. Her father and business associate are powerful white men who's primary business is colonial business expansion and "discovering" new worlds. So thank you Tim Burton and Disney for providing our children with a sound education in the morality of the natural order of the world, where if it is black, deformed or disabled it will be evil and needs to be defeated by attractive, unblemished white people.
