In which there is a class trip.

Alec was not a happy little camper. He wasn't even trying to hide it as he stood in line with the other kids from his class. They were mostly bouncing around, happy and eager. He, however, clung to his father's hand and practically hid behind him. He could smell the water even out here and he wasn't a fan. At all ( Read more... )

Dean felt Alec clinging to him and really didn't blame him. He knew how the kid felt about water and wasn't about to push him any, but he was a little excited about this. He and Sam had never had the chance to go to an aquarium when they were kids -- they never really stuck around long enough to go on field trips, and John wasn't exactly one for educating his kids, so this was his first time as well.

Ben was up ahead with his friends, not wanting to hang out with his dad at the moment, and Dean didn't really blame him there, but Alec was sticking close pinned to Dean's side like he had an abnormally thick leg. Dean did his best to move him along, though, inching them closer to the door, a gentle hand on the back of his shoulders.

"Relax, kiddo. It's not gonna be so bad."

Alec let his father move them forward, willing to at least not fight it. But only because Dean was there. Only because he could trust his father to protect him. "Says you! I can smell the water already." It smelled strange. Salty. He would have been curious if it had been anything but water.

Dean paused for a moment, before looking over at Alec with a bit of an eyebrow raise. "You do know that we aren't going in the water, right?"

"Yes." He replied promptly. There was a pause and then much quieter. "No? No one told me that."

Dean just chuckled slightly, before looking down at him. "We are not getting wet. All the water and fish are behind very thick glass, so you don't have to even touch it."

"I dunno. Glass sometimes isn't that strong." But that did help a little. He still wasn't leaving his father's side or letting go of his hand, but he did back up enough to leave a little space between them

Dean gave his hand a bit of a squeeze, before continuing to lead the way into the aquarium, crossing under the entryway with the rest of the class and moving into the first room with windows in the wall, showing groups of the less impressive fish swimming around.

Alec shivered, and pressed closer to Dean again, but he couldn't help but look around. It was, he noticed, very dry.

Dean let him stay as close as he liked, but that wasn't going to deter his poking around any. He started to wander closer to one of the tanks, peering at the fish inside with a bit of a look of wonder.

"Hey, buddy, look at that guy. He's kinda cool looking."

Alec's eyes narrowed, not ready to give up the suspicion yet, as he was shuffled closer to one of the tanks and he looked up as his father asked.

It. . . was kinda cool looking. All dark with bright green stripes.

As they were looking, one of the sea worms ruffled it's way up from the bottom of the tank, stirring a bit of the dust in the water, before wandering off to one of the other tanks.

Alec leaned a little to keep watching, and then snapped back to upright as soon as he realized he was doing it. "I don't think that was a fish."

"Neither do I," Dean said, before starting to move them down a bit towards one of the plaques sitting on the edge of the tank. "Looked more like a worm to me."

"Like a snakey-worm." Now he was sort of curious. As long as he was still inside his dad's personal bubble that was.

Dean grinned a bit. "Yeah, like a snakey worm." He paused for a minute as he read over the plaque before shrugging. "Sea slug, actually. That's what it's called."

He looked up at his father with an expression that said the man had to be lying or something. "Seriously? That didn't look anything like a slug." He felt almost indignant over it.
