What would she tell herself if she could write a letter to the child that she had been? For a brief moment the lyrics of a song filtered through her mind. "For an instant, I forgot myself; that allowed me to write this song. For an instant, I turned my mirror away; that allowed me to see myself as I truly am. I lost time, but I gained time. I need a story I can tell myself."

"Dear Jean,

Don't forget your dreams. And don't let anything else intrude on them. Ignore what your mother/father/sister says. Look in the mirror. Remember what you see there. Carry that image with you, in your heart of hearts. Remember above all else who you are. Stay true to yourself. Just for a moment in time. Because that moment will one day make all the difference. Life is not made of large blocks of time. But moments. Small slivers of life to keep close to your heart, to keep you warm and caring and feeling. The feel of sunlight on bare arms on a summers day. Soft lips on yours during your first kiss. A hug. A touch. Years from now, those memories are all that will matter. You can forget the rest. Tell yourself that it never happened that way. Rewrite your history, make it your own.

Always.
