Luther is actually in the Mansion this time--usually doesn't venture there, too far from his earth, from whatever secret place he lives (growing into a tree by now, or one of the old boulders that are covered with root and seem to be growing out of the ground, pushing up like a seed ( Read more... )

She's there but it makes her twitchy, ever since that day it has, and she nearly runs into him. Her half apology turns into a fully one, though, when she sees who it is. "Oh... I'm sorry. It was my fault."

He shakes his head and smiles at her, as he always will.

"How've you been getting on?"

"Good. You?" At the same time he offers to walk exitwards with her. Possibly he noticed the twitchy and the preoccupied.

She goes with him, almost not noticing that she's glad to head for the exit. "Fairly enough. Some things've been better, some worse."

A nod: yes, things are like that. He's quiet, listening to her footsteps and any words she has.

After a little, she says, "Where do you stay?"

"Outside."

Quite true. The weather has been nicer. His manner conveys his agreement. And then he nods again, smiles--thank you. It's appreciated. And finally speaks, saying, "I'm a carpenter." If you need something done. A neighbourly trade, food for service.

"Oh good. Percy might like some help with the tomato frames he's mentioning or some such thing. We can ask."

Smile! Because Luther can build near to anything, and likes using his hands.

It's so strange to imagine he was a soldier only a few years ago, and rode bloodstained, wild. He does nothing now that would ever imply the past.

"I'm okay with a hammer if someone's telling me what to do, but I never learned it. I weed, mostly, and cook."

"Good thing to know." The cooking, presumably.
