Have chiles rellenos and tamales and a margarita at Doña Maria's, and arrive starving or plan to have leftovers.
Have the Alaskan waffle at the Decatur Blueberry Hill, where they used to let me and canenero sit in the closed-off smoking section during the graveyard shift, where the waitresses would also sit and smoke through their meals.
Eat yen tao four & the herbal salad at Komol amid the wig shops and tranny bars, and the massage parlors & sex clubs & acupuncturists. (The big building in the southwest corner of the lot was once an ice rink where my father played hockey and figure skated; then it was a roller rink, then a soccer arena, then an amusement park, then the church I grew up in-and then it was an ice rink. Again. And now it's back to being a roller rink.)
Play Pinball Circus & Barb Wire at the Pinball Hall of Fame. Now, apparently, in a bigger, brighter, and less flavorful location-that's how we do. Across the street from the Liberace Museum, now closed (also how we do). The Rum Runner there has a shuffleboard table
( ... )
Your city ate me alive. I feel a constant, compelling urge to go back but also feel like spending any extended period of time there would destroy me. I know "The Strip" isn't what real life is like there but I admire and respect anyone that can survive in the desert.
Hit most of the stops you recommended and they were all wonderful...you should send me your address and I'll mail you a thank you present.
Also, I asked every local I had a conversation with where they would go for a vacation and literally every single person (even the prostitute) said the same thing: the ocean. Go figure.
