wow the internet is old
Mountains are old; the sea is old. We are as sparks, from a flint striking steel, striking a fuse.
All I want is art. All I have is art. All I need is art. Daily the baggage and the scales fall away.
Experiences to describe, given the opportunity, to my sixteen year-old self:
·the reverb in my new place
·my daily bike commute & how I don't drive anymore
·my ever-strenghtening vox and arrangement chops
·the quality and variety of dishes springing from my kitchen
·the size of my kitchen and the way it's the center of the apartment and how it looks and sounds and smells and feels with people I love crowded into it eating and laughing and singing
·the fellow working on his (my) archtop guitar
·the fellow himself, for that matter
·the big red wall with its half-dozen guitars and its piano and its organ and its many tiny keyboards and its fiddle and its cameras
·the taste of tomatoes and basil still warm from my own garden
·the sound of the train passing a mile away, shivering through the houses like a sunset made audible
·the scent of magnolias filling a neighborhood, and clouds of cherry blossom petals swirling across the street
·how I now move about the earth with clear vision, a clear head, and a clear understanding of my desires and purpose
·(and, why not: clear skin)
·for the first time, a sense of distance
·for the first time, a sense of perspective
·a sense of time and scale and the value of a universe where everybody lives once and everything ends, violent and beautiful and godless; unaltered, fundamentally, by arbitrary whim; and, therefore, free
·for the first time, a sense of what is precious
·just about any five-minute clip from any part of the last year, really
·(and O, how precious it is)
if you're not
gettin' happier
as you get older
then you're fuckin' up
What is spring to a man from the desert? Here, then, is the answer.
