Penny, Elle and Ruby soon settled into life in the township. With one of the largest households, they had been charged with the task of growing and stockpiling large quantities of produce.
Simeon and Billy were certainly regular visitors to the household. And while Billy was clearly smitten by Ruby's charms, in the early days Simeon appeared to be unsure which one of the girls he liked better.
Finally though, it seemed that Penny had made the decision for him. She felt that she was best suited for the role of founder's wife, and felt sure that this would be the best route to financial security. She was worried by Simeon's wandering eye, but the relative isolation of the township reassured her. And what with the only single ladies in town being her oldest friends, surely there would be no opportunity for temptation?
The rest of the week whizzed by in a flurry of foraging, skilling and beautifying. Elle had been studying mechanics in order to help out with the planning for the electric and water infrastructure that they were desperate to establish. Meanwhile Penny had designated herself as the town's makeover woman, her interest in fashion, while not typically as fundamental to survival as some of the other skills, would be useful in attracting tourists and other passerbys to the township in day to come.
It soon emerged that Ruby was the girl with green fingers. She enjoyed the solitude, the fresh air, the fact that she was making a big contribution to the township, and even more surprisingly, she loved the nuturing side of things. Let's face it, she thought with a half smile, this is about as close to mothering as I'm ever going to get.
She was happy for her friend Penny, as she moved out to start her life with Simeon although she didn't really get the attraction, of marriage that is.
