j00j update: stargate, potter, firefly, star wars, sentinel, highlander
Housekeeping: I've made tags for most of the fandoms we rec (fandoms that rarely produce fic just get a "rare fandom" tag, so if you're like me and go looking for weird things, that's how you'd find pern slash, or swordspoint fic, or that sort of thing here), and there are tags for major pairings in fandoms where there's a variety of pairings, as opposed to fandoms like Sentinel where the odds are good that it's Jim/Blair. I've also tagged this year's entries. Goblin or I may go back and tag others (and/or add more pairings tags) when we have some spare time.
And now, recs, because it's been forever.
I've mostly been reading Stargate 'verse stuff lately for some reason, and these are a few things I've come across lately (not necessarily all new) that particularly struck me for one reason or another.
Quick question-- I threw together a sort of Stargate: SG-1 and Atlantis recs primer for the Goblin, but I can easily remove my chatty comments to her and put that up here, if there are other people looking to get into those fandoms. Any interest?
SG-1
THE HANGED MAN by M. Jack/Daniel (J/S, T/D, S/D implied). Author summary: "The day they don't drag him back, it'll be time to let go." Dark and rather kinky, but very much about Daniel's character.
The Taste of Honey, The Hum of Bees by Salieri. (gen, I think) Author summary: "'Daniel was Daniel, but he hadn't been for a long time.' Seeking the past and finding it in each other. Early season 7." This is also very much a story about the team and who they are to each other.
Unreasonable by raqs. Sam/Daniel. Sam's feeling lonely. This is sweet (but not icky-sweet!), and funny, and very in-character. I love me some good het too, you know?
Snakeskin by Katie M. Author summary: "The Tok'ra, in five movements. Jolinar/Rosha/Martouf/Lantash, Anise/Daniel UST, Freya/Jack UST." (no, that's not nearly as kinky as it looks) Canon doesn't do too much with the Tok'ra, but this piece takes the potential that's there and makes them fascinating and complex, accomplishing one of the things I really enjoy about fanfic. Hell, she made Freya and Anise interesting.
Half-life by Jennghis Kahn. (Sam/Daniel, Jack/Daniel, Sam/Jack UST) Bleak apocafic, with a few rays of hope. Emotional, but not overwrought. I like apocafic-- have since my XF post-col fic reading days. In fact, that might have to be my next retro recs set, if I can just remember what I'm looking for...
Atlantis
It's legal in Canada by Salieri. McKay/Sheppard. An amusing little slice of McKay/Sheppard life. I could see this happening.
(more SGA next time, probably. There are so many good new stories and recs sites out there that I didn't bookmark that many stories for recs this time around)
Fandom grab-bag
The Respectability of Jewelry by skylark97. Harry Potter Remus Lupin/Bill Weasley. Author summary: " Molly is concerned with Bill’s choice of jewelry and Bill is concerned with much more intimate issues. Post-OotP." Seriously, this is great. I like this offbeat pairing, and the story is interesting, and, of course, hot.
Five Jedi Yoda Never Trained: River-- Luminous by Twinkledru J. Star Wars/Firefly. This short crossover works very well, and the words are well-chosen, too. River's voice definitely seems right.
Eight First Kisses by Sophia Prester. Firefly(various possible pairings) Author Summary: "River often wonders about her first kiss." Another good River piece. Sweet and longing.
Gentle Implosion by Elynross. House Author summary: "Ripples from the past spill over into the present, and Wilson asks House to trust him." Hey, it's House, and it's Elynross. What're you waiting for?
In Conclusion, Cousins by jacquez. Sentinel One of the many fabulous stories from the recent TS ficathon in which authors got the prompts of a TS fic cliche and a sense. Jaquez had "undercover lover" and "sight." Other wonderful stories include Brighid's sadly sweet An Empty Sky (Hurt/Comfort (coma, shot, in hospital, blind), Touch.), and so many others. Just go check it out. New Sentinel fic!
Essays, Speeches and Public Letters Highlander Methos/Kronos/Duncan. Despite that last set of slashes, which normally makes me back away from a story slowly in case it's about to pull a knife (or a knife, several guns, and sexual acts inadvisable even if one *is* Immortal) on me, this little piece is hilarious. For example: "No. It's not enough. I was a slut, but I didn't just fuck fifty, I didn't fuck a hundred ... I fucked a thousand. I fucked *ten* *thousand*!" His voice rose, and Duncan knew he wasn't exaggerating. "And I was good at it." *snicker*
