Miscellaneous Fic Recommendations

The Fourth Horseman by ishafel describes how the four horseman came to be. Written as though the lens of time--there's a certain dispassionate ruthlesness to the way the story is told that reminds me of Methos's offhand mention of his many wives. Highlander: the Series.

Road Thing by Jane St. Clair, in which Methos picks up a young man named Oz. It's an Oz we haven't seen before, precisely--both wilder and somehow more calm, and he slides into and out of Methos's life easily and without incident. Buffy/Highlander.

In the Business by KindKit. Buffy/Angel crossover, in which Anya visits LA and meets a beautiful physicist.

Second Hand part one and part two by kita0610 is absurdly good and rather indescribable. Spike and Connor after all of Buffy and all of Angel. Sharp, gritty, and yet somehow dreamlike.

Frailty by Jane St. Clair is an unexpectedly excellent Pirates of the Caribbean/Evangelion crossover. In the age of the Angels, Shinji meets Commodore Norrington. Some characters cling to each other in desperation, and some refuse to do so because honor outranks everything else. Very short, very good.

Too Many Stars and Not Enough Sky by Kaite is Troi/Worf in which he's not her Imzadi, she's not breakable, and Federation officers aren't nearly as sexless as the tv show would have us believe. I love how Troi thinks about her bruises, her choices, her uniform. I've never liked Troi before, but this fic almost makes me want to. Star Trek: TNG

Snake Oil by Martha, is a long story (technically the middle of a trilogy that can be found here) that nevertheless never drags. It's the scariest story I've read in years, fanfic or otherwise. The details of their daily lives, the slow development of the twisty fear and pain of a haunting, and the note-perfect characterization make this all too believeable. Although Jim's Sentinel powers play a part in the story, Sentinel canon is unnecessary to enjoy the piece. Martha is one of the best Sentinel writers out there, and this creepy tale is the perfect showcase for why. Sentinel.

Call Him a Dog by Lanning Cook is a funny little take on Jim and Blair from an outsider's perspective. Sentinel.

Nameless by C Elisa is the short story of a student's conversation with Xavier, post X2. The student's power is especially interesting. X-Men.

Four Ways of Coming Out of the Cold by Penknife. Four scenarios in which Ororo Munroe meets Xavier. Some are darker than others. X-Men.

Blade by ishafel. Swordspoint is a wonderfull fractured fairy tale of a love story, but it feels so self-contained that I've always thought good fanfic would be impossible. Ishafel proves me wrong with this gorgeous little piece. Told from Richard's point of view, it perfectly captures the blend of coldblooded study and overwhelming passion that makes up his character. I adore the way he speaks of love in terms of swords, and I love Alec's manic weirdness. Swordspoint.

Variations on the Destruction of the Ring by Nell are a serious of hilarious alternatives to the Mount Doom sequence. LOTR

Itch by Becca Ming is an illustrated Viggo/Orlando drabble, short, winsome, and stunningly evocative. (beccaming has deleted her journal, so this link is now broken. Sorry!) LOTR RPS

Half Asleep and Dreaming by Mirabile Dictu and Empress Wu. Primarily Viggo/Orli, in which Viggo tries several different focuses for his sight before finally finding what was there all along. LOTR RPS
