1. I wake up from a dream of Loch Ness and the invention of new landscaping equipment and go to the chair in front of the iMac. I do this every morning. Every morning. Only the dreams change. And sometimes I try to remember what life was like before 1994, when the internet invaded my life. To be fair, yes, I did invite it in. This is the way of things with vampires. But, before, before the vampire, how did days begin?
2. Jesus, it's not enough I wake up with a goddamn migraine, I also have to wake up to a royalty check from Audible.com - a sorely needed injection of funds. An actual royalty check? Scarcer than fucking hens' teeth! But there it is, grinning that stupid grin at me. My first reaction is to tear it into shreds and feed the shreds to the cats.
3. I mentioned the headache already, so never mind.
4. The weather here has turned - even for Rhode Island - unseasonably cold. The low last night was something like 54˚F. Looking at the forecast, I suspect "summer" is over. I don't know how I'm going to manage this shit for the rest of my life, I truly do not. I think I will retaliate by getting fat.
I'm wondering if I could save up enough money to buy a house trailer, park it in some darkest corner of Birmingham, and live off Arby's. Shit, that actually sounds pretty nice.
5. I was going to begin Cherry Bomb yesterday. I genuinely meant to do so. But I needed to go over the editorial letter for
Pink Delicious with Spooky, who will be doing some of the editing. And I got lost in that. And then I realized a Very Big Problem with my plans for the new book and locked up. In Writerland locking up is called "thinking."
6. We finally watched the season finale of Defiance. Very well done. And as for the choice of Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor, I'm going to withhold judgment until I see how he does it. Frankly, anything's an improvement after Matt Smith. Though, it's gonna be hard for me not to see Capaldi as Oldsen in Local Hero (1983), grown freakishly old.
7. The surest way to guarantee I'll never watch something, or read something, or listen to something, is to suggest that I do. Not sure why. Probably, I'm just an asshole.
8. I may begin the book today. Maybe. My headache says it ain't gonna happen. The premature autumn Outside agrees.
9. Today I spotlight an incredibly insightful and incisive Amazon "review" of
The Drowning Girl, written by one Scott Egge of St. Paul, MN. He writes:
Felt like I was on a merry-go-round reading the same pages and dialog over and over, but never getting anywhere.
10. Note that on this day in 1945 the U.S. Army Air Force dropped an atomic bomb, named "Little Boy," on Hiroshima, Japan, killing an estimated 80,000 people.
I mean, Jesus. Isn't that fucking brilliant?
Indifferent,
Aunt Beast
