Meet Abydosaurus and Bistahieversor

Feb 25, 2010 18:55

Here 2010 is hardly two-months old, and already a number of new dinosaur taxa have been described. The most exciting among these may be a new tyrannosarid, Bistahieversor sealeyi, from the Late Cretaceous of New Mexico, and a new brachiosaurid, Abydosaurus mcintoshi, from relatively older Late Cretaceous beds in Utah. Bistahieversor, known from ( Read more... )

I've been thrilled with the Bistahieversor material ever since the first formal announcement. While I had no problems with the idea of tyrannosaurids in the Big Bend area of Texas, I had major problems with the idea of Tyrannosaurus itself there. Bistahieversor, though, gives good hints that the Big Bend tyrannosaurid was something completely new.

(By the way, I don't know if you check out the Dinosaur Toy Blog, but it looks as if 2010 is going to be an exemplary year for good dinosaur replicas. The Carnegie Collection's new Tylosaurus is absolutely stunning, and I've already snagged last year's Nigersaurus for my own collection. This year: Cryolophosaurus, Ichthyosaurus, Rhamphorynchus, and a revised and improved Brachiosaurus. I'll even be a complete bastard and note the new Prehistoric Sealife Toob and Dinosaur Skulls Toob coming out next month. Yep, I think I know where at least a part of my income tax refund check is going this year...)

I've tried rather hard to stop accumulating dinosaurs...however, yes, the Tylosaurus (an old friend of mine) is very nice. They didn't get the tail right, but no one ever does. And yes, I expect I'll be getting both the "toobs" as well. Damn you, plastic dino beasts!

I've tried as well. Of course, considering that I've been collecting since 1972, that still leads to a rather impressive collection. (Hence, why I had that Invicta Dimetrodon.) These days, I just keep up with the Wild Safari line: the last thing I want to do is turn the house into the paleo equivalent of a Hummel figurine junkie's.
