Looking for Jacova Angevine (again).

There was no entry yesterday because the DSL went out Tuesday night and didn't come back until early yesterday evening. It might have been the rain. There was a lot of rain. Who knows. I dragged my reclusive carcass to the library to check my e-mail, but there were too many people and I didn't stick around long enough to look at LJ. In theory, I can access the web with my cell phone, but, in practice, it all seems too tedious to bother with, all those damn tiny keys, having to remember how many times to press a key just to get an "o" out of the silly thing. The "future" should not be so annoying, I think.

Tuesday afternoon my ten copies of the Daughter of Hounds ARC arrived. So, now I have a pretty good idea what DoH will look like as a book. And it looks good, but I'm always a tad disoriented by this part of the process, holding a bound novel which, previously, has only ever been a manuscript. Suddenly, it ceases to be merely a series of numbered pages. Suddenly, it's all set in stone, an artefact instead of a thing in progress. DoH is a bit thicker than any of my other novels; that shouldn't have surprised me as much as it did. Anyway, I'll be sending a few of these out and setting a few aside. A copy of the ARC has already surfaced on eBay, as of yesterday, even though no one but bona-fide reviewers should have received the things, even though I only just got mine, even though it says right across the top of the cover NOT FOR SALE. I would be grateful if you'd not bid on it. I may contact eBay and request that the auction be ended, as it's not legal and probably means that a copy that could have gone to a legit reviewer has gone, instead, to a dealer.

Somehow, I've all but lost the last two days. There's been no writing. I'm hemorrhaging time I can't afford to be bleeding out. Today, I absolutely have to get started on the next part of my collaboration with Sonya (sovay). We talked about it on Tuesday, deciding that it would be more fantasy than sf, that we would manage the collaboration by an alternating POV, two characters, she handles one, I handle the other, and, by this means, the story leapfrogs towards THE END.

Next Saturday is Mabon. The Wheel of the Year turns faster than ever it has before. Spooky's planning our Mabon feast. I'm hoping we have a few friends over to help us mark the equinox.

Have you seen the trailer for Guillermo del Toro's El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)? Wow. I mean, wow. I still very, very disappointed that the studio pulled the plug on his adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness, but this goes some ways towards making up for it. By the way, back in February and March 2002, when there was the crazy Hollywood flap over Threshold, del Torro was one of the better directors who seriously considered taking on the novel. It would have been cool. Anyway, El Laberinto del Fauno will be out in December.

Last night, we watched Project Runway, of course, and were horrified by the return of Angela and Vincent, but happy to see them leave again. And likewise glad to see Kayne finally get the boot. I'm fond of all the final five designers, but suspect that, in the end, this is going to come down to either Michael or Jeffrey. Later, we watched Bell, Book, and Candle (1958). Later still, I read Tolkien's Unfinished Tales, portions of "The History of Galadriel and Celeborn."

And now I should get to work, because today I really do have to work. To write. Here in my office, which is at least clean again.

Postscript (1:05 p.m.): I've just noticed that publishersweekly.com has this to say about Daughter of Hounds - "Caitlin R. Kiernan offers a dark SF fantasy." Well, I suppose if one is very, very generous in herhisit's interpretation, DoH might could be considered sf, but I would not have named it so.
