One Year, Today

Oct 07, 2024 22:12

I will mark the anniversary of the horrific, murderous Hamas-led attack on Israel with this link, via the ADL. It speaks volumes.

Anti-Israel Activism on U.S. Campuses, 2023-2024

"The 2023-2024 ADL annual report on anti-Israel activism on U.S. campuses tallied 2,087 anti-Israel incidents of assault, vandalism, harassment, protests/actions and divestment resolutions between June 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024, a staggering 477% increase in those categories compared to the same period in 2022-2023. This marks the highest number ever documented by ADL." (italics mine)

~ and, also from the ADL ~

ADL Records Dramatic Increase in U.S. Antisemitic Incidents Following Oct. 7 Hamas Massacre

"Since the Hamas massacre of Israeli civilians on Oct. 7, ADL (the Anti-Defamation League) has recorded a significant spike in antisemitic incidents across the United States. Preliminary data from ADL Center on Extremism indicates that reported incidents of harassment, vandalism and assault increased by 388 percent over the same period last year." (italics mine)

And yes, I do think Netanyahu is a thug and needs to go. And yes, I do think this war has to end ASAP. But I aso recognize the right of the Israeli people to protect themselves following what amounted to Israeli's Pearl Harbor or 9/11. There are no simple answers here.

Not much to say for today. Sunny and very warm. Our high was 84.9F, with a heat index of 85F.

Now that Bright Dead Star is essenially out of my hands, along with its accompanying chapbook/novella, I am permitting myself one week to work on nothing but MP2, the second mosasaur paper, before going back to the fiction, to the digest and the The Night Watchers. I"m trying to shrug off some of the stress (and there is an unspeakable amount of stress arund here) by focusing on the precision of morphological observations, as well as the zen-like calm that comes to me from pick microvertebrates from sediment samples, McWane's earliest Eocene-aged Bashi Marl samples from Mississippi. I did talk with Lynn Harrell at the state geological survey a good bit today, and with Adiel at the state museum. If nothing goes amiss, I'll be in Tusacloosa on the 22nd, and this is the visit I was supposed to have made in August.

I began reading the second volume of Peter Watts' Behemoth: Seppuku, the end of his Rifters series.

Please, please, please visit the Dreaming Squid Sundries shop and find something you cannot live without. I'm much rather you buy one of my books or one of Spooky's tie-dyes than accept donations (though the latter keeps saving our asses, and we are grateful, either way).

Finally, well...the nightmare that is Hurricane Milton, which I predict will be a Category 5 by tomorrow. And yes, this has happened before. Back in 2005. Recall Rita slamming into Texas right after Katrina? I'll likely say a lot more about the storm, imcluding the bizarre and amazingly ignorant conspiracy theories sprouting re: recent hurricanes. To quote a stupifying list from my favorite local meteorologist, James Spann:

*The moon has disappeared and was nuked by the government
*Hurricanes are steered and controlled by “chemtrails” and HAARP
*Every federal agency, including the National Weather Service, now exists and has orders to help a certain political candidate win the election
*All hurricane relief workers are being jailed
*Four more hurricanes are being “steered” into Florida this month

I fear will have to write an essay now on what would be required to destroy the Moon and what would happen to the Earth if it were possible for us to do that. The failure of the American educational system on display.
