Clouds most of the day. Ugh. Our high was 84F, with a heat index of 86F.

Work? I spent another couple of hours on the galleys for Bright Dead Star. I hope to finishing with this in the morning. My eyes have gotten so bad that there are times that more than two hours of anything leaves them burning so badly I have to stop for a time. Yeah, I need to go to the optometrist again. Where's the time? Where's the money? I'm wearing glasses that were new in 2012, eccept my "reading" (close-up) glasses, which were bought years ago at a pharmacy.* But I digress. Or something. I worked on MP2 and the Bashi and talked with Adiel at the state museum about MP3. As soon as my latest booster kicks in, I have to make the trip to Tuscaloosa.

I think Kathryn is essentially done with the taxes. It's obscene. Wait, she's not, she says. Done, I mean. But we know what the damage will; the math is done.

Last night's spooky film was the new version of 'Salem's Lot. Now, I'll start by saying the source material is not a great novel. It isn't. Moving Dracula to Maine was, in 1975, a sorta interesting idea. And it spawned a so-so, two-part TV movie (1979) and an awful sequel to that (1987). And there was another two-part version in 2004. But anyway...this new adaptation. Directed by Gary Dauberman. Here's something Wikipedia says:

A theatrical film adaptation of 'Salem's Lot, from New Line Cinema, was announced in April 2019, with Gary Dauberman set to write and direct, and James Wan attached to produce. Filming began in Boston in September 2021. Lewis Pullman stars as Ben Mears, while Spencer Treat Clark and Makenzie Leigh will co-star as Mike Ryerson and Susan Norton respectively. The film was originally scheduled to be released in cinemas on September 9, 2022, but was pushed back to April 21, 2023, before being pulled from Warner Bros.'s release schedule indefinitely. The film premiered directly on Max on October 3, 2024.

Obviously, nothing went as planned. And the end result, well...it's bland and inoffensive and not at all scary. And amazingly rushed. True, it sorta catches the feel of 1975 (I was eleven), and the use of Gordon Lightfoot was inspired, and Lewis Pullman as Ben Mears is cool. And I think that's all I can say about it that would be remotely flattering. There is a storied tradition of astoundingly bad movies based on Stephen King books; just think Maximum Overdrive, Children of the Corn, and [your favorite here]. And they're usually bad movies that are bad in a way that's fun to talk about. Not so this new 'Salem's Lot. It's just dull. And silly. Very, very silly. Barlow is so silly, well...think Marilyn Manson in very bad Count Orlock makeup silly. And dull. Anyway, enough of that.

Please visit the shop. Thank you. Oh, a not on the bee photo below. Spooky took some great flower/bee photos today, some much better than this one. But I chose this one because you can see the bumblebee's three ocelli (or simple) eyes between the two large compound eyes. Lots of people don't even know bees have five eyes.
