Much cooler wearing. Overcast all day, some rain, and a high on only 77F.
And a spectacular writing day. I was up long before dawn, and I did 1,664 words on the chapbook/novella. And remember, because I do not rewrite - aside from some line editing - but produce first drafts that are final drafts, that 1,664 solid words. Not placeholders. Right now, the ms. is at 12,114 words, and I'm aiming for somewhere betweem 17k and 20k. So it's not impossibe, at this rate, that I could be done by sometime next weekend.
I feel as it, at sixty, the novella has become the form at which I most excel.
I also did work on MP2 today, mostly reading. I want to try and calculate the optical parameters of this species of mosasaur, so I'm reviewing that math needed to arrive at the PND (posterior nodal distance) and reviewing the relevant literature. There are also questions of latitudinal diversity/biogeography among the Mosasauridae towards the end of the Cretaceous that I'd like to talk about, but both of these things are second or third to the basic anatomy. As Mike said, this paper is a "describe it and name it" job, and I try to stay focused on that.

I have something I intend to post to Facebook in the morning, but I'm going to go ahead and put it here first:
At 60, after over 30 years as a professional writer I urge young writers to reject trigger warnings, sensitivity readers, all that crap that we got by just fine without for all of human history until the last few years. These things are anathema to art. But I won't be here that much longer, and the artistic langscape wll be yours. So, it's you're decision. I will fight this stuff, these artistic fascisms and censorship dressed up as concern, until my dying day, but the torch is being passed to you, and I can only hope you will make think of the integrity of literature first and bury this protectionism and hysteria in a deep, deep hole.
I also recommend you read
"Why ‘Sensitivity Readers’ Are Bad for Free Speech, Art, and Culture" by Angel Eduardo.
Oh, and I'm fairly certain that my next next short fiction collection (so, let's say late 2026-early 2027), the one after Bright Dead Star (2025), will be titled Your Hate Makes Me More Beautiful.
