A little cooler today, though no storms so far, despite a 70% chance this afternoon. Our high was 90F, with a heat index of 97F.
I was up at 7 a.m. this morning, and over the next two hours I did 1,161 words and finished "Untitled 47," for Sirenia Digest 218. It feels really fucking good to finish something, even if it's only a vignette. Later, I spent another hour on the piece, proofreading, editing. I'll pull the digest together tomorrow morning, and it'll go out to subscribers in the afternoon or evening. I spent some time on the Bashi Marl sample (which seems to have become my paleo' "side hustle"), picking out microvertebrates - chondrichthyian and teleost fish remains from sediment despoited during
the PETM. I did some cleaning in the office, including one of the binocular microscopes. I talked with Bill about the Bright Dead Star ebook cover and with Brian Freeman about a short essay on King's Carrie for a book commorating the novel's 50th anniversary (Coedited with Rich Chizmar).
I feel better when I am working.
Last night we watched two scary movies. The first, Danny and Michael Philippou's Talk to Me (2022) which was actually a very effective ghost story, but a bit more intense than I was in the mood for. The second feature, Jeffrey A. Brown's The Beach House (2019) was an ambitious bit of apocalypse, but for me it fell fairly flat. The acting and direction left a lot to be desired, and the special effects were not up to the desired Cronenbergianiams. This afternoon's film was Ridley Scott's The Martian (2015).
BUT. The most important this today is that you check out our sale on Vile Affections, my 2021 short-fiction collection (my eighteenth) from Subterranean Press. See photo below. We're offering eleven copies for only $30 apiece, and that $15 off the publication price. Only eleven copies. And we've already sold three of them.
So, hop on over to the Dreaming Squid Sundries shop and snap one up. Yes, I will sign and personalize these upon the buyer's request. The money goes to pay an unexpected bill, so thanks.
That should do it for now.
Later Tater Beans,
