Sunny morning. Cloudy afternoon. Our high was 55F.
I was hit yesterday with a headache that kept me up half the night and has hung on through the day. But I still managed about 1k words on The Night Watchers.
The afteroon's movie was Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (2009).
That's about all I'm up for I think. But. I remind you:
Kathryn and I are being extremely low key about Christmas this year. But if you'd like to help out with some very large upcoming expenses we're facing, there's always
the Dreaming Squid Sundries shop. And note that
Vile Affections will be a mere $30 for just a little whole longer.
Back in 2021, Publisher's Weekly was rather fond of Vile Affections ~ Kiernan (Comes a Pale Rider) ties together these 22 shorts with an aesthetic of intimacy, strangeness, eroticism, and lingering mysteries. Many of these pieces are more vignettes or explorations of dreamscapes than traditional short stories. Though no worldbuilding crosses between tales, and settings vary from postapocalyptic fantasy landscapes (“A Chance of Frogs on Wednesday”), undersea realms (“The Line Between the Devil’s Teeth (Murder Ballad No. 10)”), dark fairy tale lands (“Iodine and Iron”), and vampire lairs (“King Laugh (Four Scenes)”), to deserted highways (“Virginia Story”) and art openings (“Untitled 44”), Kiernan’s beautiful descriptions easily pull readers into each microcosm. Almost all are told by a first-person narrator in implicit conversation with an unseen, perhaps monstrous, “you,” or with a lover or psychiatrist in the room, giving them a confessional immediacy and immersing the reader in the role of voyeur. Kiernan’s extensive endnotes will be a treat for devoted fans interested in their process. Kiernan’s skill at weaving eerie, magical moments shines.
Also, very good, Colorado. Won't matter in the end, but I have never objected to giving unavoidable, impending doom the middle finger.
