Disappointment is an inexhaustible resource.

A sunny day. Our high was 84F.

And I was right about today; just saying.

No work today. There was some extremely depressing news early in the day via email. And then we spent the afternoon at a vet's office in Hoover. Selwyn, who has not been well for many months, has stones in his bladder that have to be surgically removed tomorrow. And, well, naturally we do not have the money for that. Because there are the taxes, and rent, and everything else. I'm going to set up a GoFundMe thing tomorrow morning, our first since 2015. It's only about ~$1000, and surely I am not fallen so far that I cannot raise at least that paltry sum. I hope. I'll put a link here tomorrow. Every penny will be appreciated. This is not for me; this is for Selwyn. He's at the vet overnight and will come home late tomorrow.

I fished the third book in "James S.A. Corey's" Expanse series (there is no such person; it's a pseudonym for a duo). The first book, though the prose ws dull as dishwater, was enjoyable in a "turn your brain off and just follow the bouncing ball" sort of way. On Audible* I gave it five stars. The second book was not nearly so entertaining, and I gave it four stars. And the third book, which I actually had to struggle to finish, got three stars. And there are six more books in this series. And since Audible does not have stars to the right of the zero, I think I'm done with these. Man, I wish I could churn out crap like those books and see that sort of money roll in. I honestly think the problem is that everything worth saying was said in the first book. Maybe if an afterword had been appended to the first book, they could have tossed in all the rest. Anyway, I've begun Sinclair McKay's The Fire and the Darkness: The Bombing of Dresden, 1945. Life is too short for mediocrity (despite being generally overlong).

Sirenia Digest 212 should go out to subscribers tomorrow.

By the way, the trip to the vet yesterday marked the first time I have been to any place I'd not been to previously since COVID-19 lockdown began in March 2020.
