Mostly overcast today and cooler. Our high was only 92F, though the heat index still topped 101F.
After two nights of severe insomnia, I lay down at 11:30 p.m. last night and did not open my eyes until 7:30. That is extremely unusual for me. I tend to sleep in thirty minutes increments. So, I was left disoriented for hours. Nothing was written. Not much was accomplished.
Reading Deathbird Stories today, I was struck, again, by how great a debt The Sandman and American Gods owe to this collection. The central theme of Deathbird Stories is, “When belief in a god dies…the god dies.” Neil and Harlan were very close friends, and I'm sure this was no secret between them. I think I first read Deathbird Stories in 1981. I was in high school. I began reading The Sandman in the summer of 1989. Oh, the stories that comprise the original edition of Deathbird Stories, the one I first read, were originally published between 1960 and 1974. This entry's subject line is, by the way, a quote from Deathbird Stories.
Today I wrote Dr. David Burnham at the University of Kansas about a certain fossil.
Today is mine and Kathryn's 21st anniversary.
