Yesterday was consumed by the busyness of writing, and I had to admit that it had been fairly wonderful, having spent five consecutive days consumed with the act of writing. That movie actually freaked me out when I saw it as a kid; particularly the bits where the leeches were feasting on their victims, and when the drained bodies were bobbing in the swamp. I would sacrifice every Yorkshire terrier in my neighborhood, as well as several of the more obnoxious children, on an altar to Shug-Niggurath to see a Coen Bros remake. I must say I'm distressed that the Halloween pickings seem slim on TV this weekend. Yes, Turner Classic Movies is running some bona fide classics on Monday, but not till then; in previous years they would have been doing stuff all weekend. And their Monday lineup is mostly things like THE HAUNTING and THE BIRDS, which of course are great, but part of their normal rotation. Where are the vampires and man=made monsters and mummies and wolfmen? Where's Boris and Bela and Chris and Peter and Vincent? And where are all the more obscure and second-string films that I wouldn't ordinarily buy or rent, but which make welcome finds when one stumbles across them at 3 a.m.? I'm talking about the early 60s Mexi=monsters, the sexy Italian vampires, the Spanish wolfmen, the more obscure Japanese giants, and the bug-eyed beasties who threatened American teenagers in 50s drive-ins.
