Sisyphus and the Most Parsimonious Boulder (48)

Sunny today. Our high was 83˚F.

I think we can say that summer is over. I expect it to have been my last ever in Alabama.

Two documentaries this afternoon, one of the Boeing 737Max nightmare and one on the construction of a bizarre year-round, indoor Chinese "winter sports park" in the subtropics.

I managed to finish the section of MP2 on the teeth of one of the two new species this morning. Now, I have to write up the results of the PAUP4 analysis. And this morning I estimated how much time I've spent of this project since mid June, and a very conservative figure of ~200 hrs. Obviously, I cannot make a habit of this. No matter how much I'd like to, and no matter how important the work might be, seeing that number was sobering. Paleontology does not (and never will) pay my bills, and there are stories that will never be written because I took on this work.

Happy thoughts.

As the world falls down.

I posted the following to Facebook this morning, after reading several articles on the immigrants being illegally sent by Abbot and DeSantis to Martha's Vineyard and Washington D.C and about how Trump is worming his way through the espionage thing.

Watching events unfolding in the US, the way events are accelerating, and the apparent lack of alarm from most Americans, I wonder how few know that fourteen years elapsed between Hitler joining the Nazi Party (yes, it predated his involvement) and his rise to "Führer" in 1934. Then again, his propaganda machine didn't have television and the internet, only radio, the printing press, and word of mouth. If we wait until these Christofascist assholes have actually installed their dictator, it's too late. If we wait, it's over.

And, by the way, the term Christofascist is not new. It dates all the way back to 1970, coined by liberation theologist Dorothee Sölle in 1970.

Meanwhile, the Big Cartel shop is still out there, but note that the three issues of Sirenia Digest serializing the novella (97,98,99) are coming down Monday night.
