Entry No. 6,415

Feb 28, 2022 17:37

The sun came back today, thank goodness. Our high was 62˚F at the beginning of warm spell that will put us in the 80˚Fs by next weekend. Good-bye February. Hello Spring.

I hardly slept last night.

This morning, I went through back issues of Sirenia Digest, for a number of reasons. Spooky's putting together a Big Cartel shop that will offer CRK merch, including a "Year One" package collecting the first twelve issues of SD (2005-2006). It's a move towards making a lot of the back issues available online. Also, I'm considering a new, expanded version of my neo-noir SF story, "Cherry Street Tango, Sweatbox Waltz" for an upcoming issue.

The afternoon's film was Alex Proyas' Dark City (1998). It is certainly one of my favorite films of the 1990s, and probably one of my favorite SF films of the past thirty years.

I had a can on mini-ravioli for dinner.

I finished reading Elsa Panciroli's Beasts Before Us: The Untold Story of Mammal Origins and Evolution. It's not a bad book, especially if you're looking for a quick overview of the current state of our understanding of synapid/mammalian origins. But my enjoyment of it was seriously lessened by the author's decision to slather the whole affair with her political views. I don't think that's how science should be presented, and it does paleontology no favors, lashing it to this or that political agenda. And yes, I would still feel this way even if she and I were in complete agreement on all the issues involved. Healthy science does not belong to the left or the right or the center.

Last night, new episodes of The Walking Dead, 1883, and Billions. The new episode of 1883 is the final bit of Season One, and, I know I've said it before, but I love show. It's just beautiful.

Please have a look at the current eBay auctions. Thanks.

Later Tater Beans,
Aunt Beast
