I just drove through the town that was the inspiration for, "It's a Wonderful life." Amazingly, the bone of the original town is still there among the urban sprawl. It reminded me of a ghost standing with the not quite dead in Auschwitz. The traffic was so thick, it took me an hour to leave the town. When I was a kid, and my parent would traveled across county at night. The interstate was still faster, but the things you could see hitting all the small towns was like a dream. I went to college in the Champlain valley, and on the weekends I went to friend house about a hundred mile north of the school. She had a nineteen sixty Cadillac convertible, which I drove, while she and her boy friend sat in back. It was always a Friday night in the Fall, and I took a road on the rim of the valley. We looked down on lake Champlain in the moonlight, and you could smell the apples in the orchards as we drove. She came from a family that had seen better time, the house we stayed at was owned by the bank. The bank didn't care who was in the house, the place was a monster. The only heat, and light was the fireplace. it's all gone now. It's was replaced by Taylor Swift dim-wits, smart phones. Too many people.
