Background Info:
History: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Horus_Heresy History of the canon setting, Garviel is just post Istvaan III and V, but he doesn't know about V because he wasn't there. http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Garviel_Loken His history, taken up to most recent canon point.
Personality:Garviel is an extremely loyal, honorable, and thoughtful soldier. He truly believes in the destiny of humanity as a force for good in the universe, and is a staunch believer in the Imperial truth of science and rationality defeating the superstitions of Old Night. He hopes to see humanity triumphant and safe in the future, if not in his lifetime, then beyond it, under the guidance of the Emperor of Mankind.

He constantly questions his own motivations, and those of his compatriots, and acts in general as a moral brake on his comrades to keep them from turning towards evil methods or intentions. He is very honest, to the point where even the idea of a lie makes him uncomfortable. He is most often described in the novels as "straight up and down", in reference to his uncomprising character and his distaste for secrecy or lies of any sort.

His bad traits are an absolute intolerance of deception or dishonorable conduct, which at times brings him into conflict with his brothers, a phlegmatic character that can lead him to react too slowly to new information or a change in situation, and an innocence about life which can lead him to be misled by those he trusts. When he believes in someone or something, he believes in it absolutely, and when he is betrayed the results can be devastating for him. He is also fairly intolerant of aliens, or demons of any sort. He really believes in the ascendancy of humanity to the point where an average man might think him an unquestioning fanatic. (He's more complex than that, though he is very passionate about this issue.)

He also has something of a weakness in terms of technological application as he's used to very high technology, but in a cargo-cultish way. Almost all technology in his universe is the purview of servants or tech-priests, so fixing anything more complex than the firing assembly of a rifle is beyond him, and a cell phone will be kind of magical to him until he figures out that it's basically a voxcaster with cogitator abilities. (In other words he basically has to find home analogies for the rather more diverse technology of the 20th century, against the super-specialized tech of the 30th millennium).

Garviel is not a dreamer, he is very practical, and he was pleased with and accepted (after consideration) his role as a Captain of the Luna Wolves, and eventually a member of the Mournival, the unofficial advisory body of the Warmaster.

Garviel's quirks come out primarily in conversation, for he can be quite blunt with fellow soldiers, particularly those that have failed in some way, but he tends towards extremely formal and almost gentle with the humans he associates with. He's also lived among a brotherhood of men for the last century, so he's very fish out of water when it comes to dealing with women of any sort. (Making for some very hilarious canonical situations actually.)

Game Specific:
Arcana: The Emperor
Justification: Garviel is a leader of men, an authoritative, orderly figure in his canon. He is decisive and firm as a war-leader, amongst the finest Legiones Astartes that ever lived. And when things go bad, and his card reverses, Garviel loses everything. His command, his battle brothers, all the powers but his own abilities. Indecision reigns as the Mournival is deadlocked, two remaining loyal and two siding with chaos.

First Person Sample:http://dear-mun.livejournal.com/39993080.html#comments
Third Person Sample:[Garviel is confused by this odd Commercia district, so unlike anything he'd seen in any of the planets he'd previously brought to compliance. The lack of artisans making things on the spot for customers seemed strange to him, as he wandered from shop to shop, enjoying the occasional bite of food from the gift cards that had been provided to him by the reticent hotel staff. ] "I am alone here, once again a Legion of one " [ He'll muse, just before his eyes alight upon an arcade.

The flashing lights and strange noises within are strangely familiar to him, rather like the training cages of the Vengeful Spirit, only far less real. He is drawn to the lightgun games, and almost without thinking has soon jammed several quarters into the nearest one with an autofire weapon, and begins to systemically rack up a high score.

Hunched over the arcade machine the 6'6" giant seems almost comically too large for the toylike likegun he cradles in both arms, blazing away with a stoic expression, then reloading with machinelike efficiency. There is no joy, no glory in his face at all as he practices, just the precision of an experienced member of the Legiones Astartes. He tracks, targets, and eliminates each of the pixelated foes in turn, as he once grimly blasted through rank upon rank of the slavering Orks at the great triumph of Ullanor. When he completes the game, Garviel blinks, surprised to see that the play restarts, and continues his wordless practice into the night.

A child approaches, picking up the second light gun and begins to play with him, and Garviel looks down, a smile creasing his pale, craggy features for the first time since his appearance in Prospero. ]
"Welcome, brother." [ Are the only words that Garviel manages before returning to the "war" of the arcade game. ]
