White riders: a History

Jul 01, 2007 09:55

They do not name themselves, but on their world people call them many things. They are the white riders, the pale ones, the white knights. They are viewed with awe, respect, and fear. Some people consider them protectors of humanity, but others think humanity is only a casual bystander to a private war. There are the other ones, the dark riders, shambling figures in black who will attack almost any living thing they come across. Few humans survive being wounded by these, but those that do are turned into them. The pale ones hunt these, killing them wherever they find them, and this seems to be their only purpose. To all others they are simply distant and aloof. They never speak, and show little expression. They usually travel alone. They are few, and the dark ones are many, but the dark ones remain crippled by the wounds that turned them.
What few realize is that the more powerful and rare of the dark were once themselves white riders. All white riders assume this is their ultimate fate, to be turned by what they think of as the Devouring Dark. Most survive one or two deeper injuries from the Dark before they succumb, and become the creatures that their former brothers must kill.
A heavily scarred white rider is unheard of. His brothers watch and wait, ever wary that just one more wound could turn him into the most powerful of the Dark they have ever known.
