I live 5 hours north of san franciso in Arcata. Berkeley is a nice place to live if you can afford it. I've been told that many of the full professors there have to commute from other places in the bay area.

this is true of princeton and brown, too. most professors can't afford expensive college towns. i'm thinking maybe i'll live in a co-op... housing and food are much much cheaper that way. and the people come a shade more interesting.

co-ops are the way to go. and if you look early, roomshares in berkeley aren't bad either.

roomshares meaning big houses that rent by room, shared bathrooms/kitchens

yes, i'll make sure to look into those, too.
in other notes, i was wondering if you have some advice on moving my "blog" out of livejournal. the adds and cumbersome user interface are getting to me. and i refuse to pay for this stuff. i would want to carry all the old baggage over...

yes, livejournal and its appeal has been deteriorating for some time. regarding backups, i googled and found this: http://brown-betty.livejournal.com/284083.html

i have a frivolous media blog at tumblr. it's very different from livejournal but could potentially function in the same way. you could easily upload your archived entries onto webspace somewhere, but i don't know anything about carrying over entries from lj to another service. personally, i've resigned to abandoning my baggage here.
