The difference is that I like people close and you like them in the abstract.  No real human being is interesting in broad strokes and general principles.  Our averages are greys and all our words together are a white noise. 
To be believable you have to be dull in summary.  But when you get closer -- with a magnifying glass on a specific patch of skin at one instance of time -- the light condenses just so and the person blooms.
