This story begins 11 years ago when my then 19 yr old son Reece met 16 yr old Kim. She was pregnant by another guy at the time. Now the thing you need to know about Reece is that he wants to save the world. So of course they got married. In a strip mall courthouse in the middle of the afternoon. The bride wore overalls. The groom camo cut-offs. Her family didn't show up. A few months later Dakota Rae Kern was born. I pointed out to Kim that she had named her son a girls name but she didn't seem to mind and Reece never said no to her about anything.
So now we're gonna flash over the next 9 years of marriage. 9 years of Reece working 75-80 hours a week to support Kim while she stayed home and complained. Oh, she was good at complaining, but not much else. Reece cleaned the house and when he wasn't working he watched the baby. There is alot more about how horrible and stupid stuff Kim did but honestly, if I didn't know it was true facts I wouldn't believe it. Like how she inherited $500,000.00 when her father died but spent it all in 6 months and had her mother placed in a group home. Granted, her mother is insane, but obviously Kim is too. Oh, I forgot to mention that in all this time while Cody is growing up, he doesn't know that Reece isn't his natural father.
So on Christmas Eve 2 years ago Kim tells Reece that she has been having an affair with his best friend Michael. And every other man they have known for the last 9 years and some women. This list was supposed to include my daughter's husband TJ. That part turned out not to be true, but the shit hit the fan that Christmas, which is I'm sure what Kim wanted to happen. And it totally ruined Christmas for Cody. Christmas and his life.
Ok, now it's the spring of this year and Reece meets Emily. Emily has a 5 year old albino daughter. Seriously folks, you can't make this shit up. Short story, Emily and Reece are now gonna have a baby in March, but Emily refuses to watch Cody.
Oh shit. I forgot that part. When Reece and Kim split the only thing Reece demanded was Cody. Occasionally Kim and Michael will watch him but Reece has custody. He has busted his ass for the last 2 years working and raising Cody by himself. My husband and I have helped when we could, but Reece did most of the work.
There have been some hiccups with these arrangements. Like the week after Thanksgiving when Cody didn't get Kim a piece of pie when he got his own and she flipped out and wanted to have him committed like she did her Mom. Cody called his Dad hysterical but Kim said Reece couldn't see him anymore. Since Reece isn't his biological father Kim keeps holding that over his head and using it when ever she wants. Cody doesn't know that Reece isn't his "real" Dad. Reece doesn't have a lot of money so he can't afford a lawyer. Kim gets a free one because she is a minority, half Vietnamese. Then again last week she lost it again and threw Michael and their new baby Nora out. Nora is 8 months old. Again we got the phone call from Cody crying and worried about his little sister.
But the punch line to this story is Cody is coming to live with me and my husband Pat next week. I thought I was through raising kids. I wanted to be through raising kids, but I can't leave them in the situation they're in. So we're cleaning out our spare room and turning it into Cody's bedroom.
