Coming up for air

Well, the semester has ended, and I'm putting ice on the part of my head I've been using to hit the wall for the last three months. Academically, this semester has been a disaster, with my switching one class (calculus II) to audit, when I should have done that with two (calculus II, physics II). I'll be re-doing those in the fall. I squeaked through chemistry, and actually pulled a good grade out of the chemistry lab section. (The lab section was painful -- it's one credit hour, which does not prepare you for the 3 credit hours worth of time it takes!) My only A will be in Simulation Visual Systems, which is a class for the simulation/flight test minor. That class is heavily project oriented, and we built two airports for the Flight Training Devices that are used by the flight program. My part was LC39 A & B. (pdf link) The text is probably boring, but the report has good pictures of the pad models.

My extracurricular activity is still the UAV project. It's been a struggle, especially at the end of the semester when everyone is studying for finals, but the aircraft s finally flying, the camera works, and we're well on our way to getting the autopilot working. (It functions, but there's a problem with a reversed pitch channel, and the gains being too low.) No report, but here are some pictures. I still have to finish designing the parachute system, and get the 802.11b link modifications done before the competition in June.

At home, the worst of the backyard project is finally done; I can start moving out into the new shop!

And maybe get some sleep...
