it's been 6 days in india. tomorrow's their independence day. somehow, being an american, i can't help but smile.
begone, you bloody english:
good riddance!
(i felt a similar twinge, when the british withdrew from hong kong in 1997.)
now, for some idle observations ..
".. so bitter, death is hardly more severe!
but to tell the good discovered there,
i'll also tell of the other things i saw .."
~from canto i, dante alighieri's infierno
coffee and tea here are served as sweet concoctions: sugary and cut with milk. i've never been a latté or thai iced tea sort of person ..
in fact, i take the perspective that things bad for you shouldn't taste wholly pleasant (such as the bitterness of beer, wine, and espresso, the wildfire taste of chili peppers)
.. and between that and instant coffee in the mornings, i've been a little out of sorts lately.
so yes, i miss american drip coffee. saying that sounds strange, until you think of all the pleasant blends out there, like tanzanian peaberry or jamaican blue ..
.. i wonder if espresso drinkers taste similar subtleties; it's quite bitter stuff!
indian food for breakfast is terrific. once i return to the states, i have half a mind to order indian take-away in the evening and reheat the stuff for breakfast the next morning.
among my pleasant discoveries, i quite like
vada.
it's not terribly good for you, greasy, round things that they are. it is, however, an interesting spin on the donut, but savory ..
.. and even better with a bit of chutney on top, also something savory. coriander, curry leaves, coconut, or tamarind come to mind.
