Ben stood up and took his empty plate to the sink. He ran hot water to wash up. ″You could come into town to meet for lunch. It’d be a nice change.″
That got Ray’s attention. He’d actually been avoiding going into town since they moved into the cabin. It might be good for him to give it a try, maybe ease into it. ″Sure. What time?″
″Around noon. I could meet you somewhere or you could come into the station and be introduced to some of my co-workers. They’ve been asking about you.″
Ray wasn’t sure he was ready to meet any of the cops Ben worked with with yet. It was hard enough to come to terms with the fact that Ben was still a cop and he wasn’t. ″Why don’t I just meet you somewhere to eat for today?″
″That’s fine.″ Ben wiped his hands dry. ″Is Sam’s okay?″
″Works for me.″
″Good.″
Ben went into the bathroom again and brushed his teeth. When he returned to the living room, Ray had finished all the dishes and was on his last of the coffee. He watched as Ben retrieved his gun. It was so odd to watch Ben, who never wore a gun in Chicago, slip the automatic easily into his holster. He did it like it was the most natural thing in the world.
″It’s weird.″
Ben glanced up as he reached for his winter uniform hat. It was fur and had ear flaps. It sure beat the hell out the Stetson when it came to keeping the ears warm. ″What’s weird?″
″You being armed now.″
″It does feel rather different.″
Ray grinned to hide the fact that he hoped Ben never had to fire a round. Instead he teased. ″You do know how to use that thing, right?″
Ben rolled his eyes. ″I’ve even been known to hit the target from time-to-time, yes.″
