Despite the lousy weather, the New Year’s eve fireworks were a go. To Ben’s delight, the ice storm fizzled out. Instead all they got was a weak drizzle and an occasional snowflake. It was just above freezing and the sidewalks and roads were mostly cleared and salted. Instead of driving, Ben insisted that they should walk to the park nearly a mile away from the apartment. ″You’re a glutton for punishment, you know that, right?″
″You’ll thank me before it’s over.″
Ray sincerely doubted that. He put up his collar on his thickest and warmest coat. He’d even worn a blue wool scarf and a knit cap his mother had made him years ago. Plus, he’d dug out some leather gloves he hardly ever wore. He was still freezing his ass off. ″In your dreams. My car has a great heater.″
″It would also be one of several thousand on the road aiming to arrive in the same spot.″
″I’m not afraid of a little traffic.″
″I do believe it was you who was complaining profusely this time last year when we came to the fireworks show.″
Ray remembered back to the first time he’d taken Ben to the show. It’d been cold, but clear then. They’d had a great time except when it came to parking and leaving the park. It was bumper-to-bumper. Ray didn’t make it home until nearly two in the morning after dropping Ben off at the Consulate. He’d had to drag himself out of bed to work an extra shift on New Year’s day, too. It’d been a rotten way to start the new calendar. ″Oh, yeah. I remember that.″
″Your short term memory is shocking sometimes, Ray.″
″Short term? That was nearly a year ago. That’s long term in my book.″
