Sitting in traffic, Ray took a deep breath and came back to the moment. Ben sat beside him quietly being Ben. He tapped his fingers as if he was playing an invisible piano, having a little private recital in his head. Ray sometimes wished he could hear the magic music that Ben made for himself. Then again, they both couldn’t be crazy at the same time.
″What are you doing?″
″I was playing one of the Chopin nocturnes.″
″Yeah? How do you do that when you’ve got no instrument?″
″Ah, well, over the years, I’ve honed the ability to imagine the sounds. Growing up there wasn’t a lot of radios or access to music. We had to make our own.″
″In your head?″
″Yes, Ray, in our heads.″
″Wish I could do that.″
″I could teach you.″
″No, thanks. That’s what I’ve got a stereo for.″ Ray rolled his shoulders, all the tension bunched up in his neck and upper back. ″God, why is there so much traffic? I knew I should’ve gone the other way.″
″We’re only a few blocks from the station. If you want, you and Diefenbaker could get out and walk. I’ll wait and drive when the traffic clears.″
Ray had to admit it was super tempting, but he wouldn’t do that to his partner. ″It’s okay. It’s bound to start moving soon.″
″I’m sure it will. One just has to be patient in these situations.″
″Patience and me? Not a great mix.″
″I’m well aware, but perhaps we can distract ourselves.″
Ray liked that idea. ″Okay, why don’t you tell me about your first car.″
″My first car?″
″Yeah, after you got your license, what was your first car? Mine was a ‘68 Ford Mustang. It’d been totaled and my dad and I rebuilt it together. It was sweet. I painted it glossy black, six coats. Man, oh, man, I loved that car.″ Ray inched up about two feet and had to stop again. ″What about you? What’d you drive?″
″I’ve never owned my own car.″
Shocked, Ray could hardly believe it. ″Really? Never?″
″There was never any reason to own my own vehicle. When I first got my license, I drove my grandparents’ RV which they used for their mobile library. Since I enlisted, I’ve only driven service vehicles.″
″Wow.″
