″How about we grab some Chinese and go to my place?″ Kill two birds with one stone and all that. It’d been days since Fraser stayed over.
Fraser didn’t meet his eyes as he closed the last folder. ″I was thinking we could eat at the restaurant. I should probably head back to the Consulate tonight.″
Ray swallowed hard. That was the signal that Fraser wasn’t interested in spending the night. About two or three times a week, they slept together. Sometimes there was sex, sometimes it was just being together and holding one another. Ray was good either way. If it were up to him, Fraser would move in full time, make it official.
Fraser, Mr. Logical, had a mountain of arguments against that plan. Ray hated that he understood each and every one and even agreed in principle to most of them. It didn’t make it easier to get though the night when he lay in bed alone, longing for Fraser’s warm, firm body pressed against his own.
Ray worked to keep his voice neutral. Fraser didn’t need to worry about hooking up with such a needy fuck. ″Sure, Fraser. You need your sleep, too.″
″And Diefenbaker needs me to walk him. He’s been alone all evening since Constable Turnbull went off duty at five.″
″Yeah, okay. I get it. You don’t have to beat me in the head with excuses.″
″It’s not an excuse, Ray, just an explanation.″
His chest tight and gut aching, Ray argued. ″We could’ve picked up Dief at the end of shift. I offered.″
Fraser’s cheeks turned slightly red as he stood up. ″Ray, we agreed that it wasn’t good for us to spend every night together.″
Ray snapped before he could stop himself. ″I said, I know, Fraser. Just drop it. I don’t want to fight, okay?″
″Understood.″
Ray sighed and closed his eyes. ″I’m sorry. It’s just...″
″Just what?″
″I hate this.″
Fraser came around the table and stood closer, his hand on Ray’s shoulder. ″Hate what, Ray? Us? Our partnership?″
Eyes still squeezed shut, Ray hoped like hell there was nobody in the viewing room on the other side of the two-way mirror. They might get an eyeful. He whispered. ″I hate hiding us.″
″We’re being sensible.″
″I know, but me and sensible? Not a good mix.″
″Tell me about it.″
Ray smirked and finally opened his eyes to see Fraser staring right at him. Ray could take a deep dive into those blue eyes, kind and caring eyes that saw right through his tough guy routine. ″I’m not like you, Fraser. It’s hard to be all logical and do what’s safe. I’m an all in, feet first kind of guy when it comes to this stuff. I can’t seem to help it.″
″Which is why I love you so much.″
″But you won’t join me in the deep end.″
″Ray, we’ve discussed this. One of us has to keep his head and be sensible about this relationship. We have to be discreet as long as you’re undercover as Ray Vecchio. We can’t compromise his mission because of our own emotional or carnal desires.″
Ray’s lips thinned into a grin. ″Carnal? That’s the sex part, right?″
″It is. But it’s about much more than sex for me, Ray.″
Biting his lower lip, Ray pushed down the nearly overwhelming urge to kiss Fraser right then and there. To hell with sensible or safe. Instead, Ray spoke his truth. ″I love you, Fraser. I can’t help how that comes out sometimes. I don’t mean to be pissy about it when we can’t be together.″
″I know that, Ray. You manage well considering your frustration tolerance is so incredibly low.″
Ray teased. ″Maybe I’m just hornier than you.″
″I doubt that.″
