Snippet:

Downstairs at the front desk, Fraser saw Sergeant Rayner talking to a couple of young constables. Between the two men stood a small boy, no more than ten-years-old, possibly younger, with dark wavy hair, clutching a navy blue knapsack. Something familiar about the child drew Fraser’s attention immediately. Fraser walked up to them and asked, ″May I be of assistance?″

Desk Sergeant Rayner answered, ″Seems we have a young stowaway, sir.″

″Stowaway?″

One of the officers explained. ″Constable Elliot, sir. Kid rode into town in the back of a box truck. The driver thinks he climbed in somewhere between Peace River and a truck stop a couple of hours outside of town.″ Elliot motioned his head toward the child. ″Kid’s not talking. Won’t even give us his name and we couldn’t find an ID.″

The fact that a small boy would travel so far alone in the back of an unheated truck in such cold weather and refuse to tell his name was concerning. There had to be a serious reason for such behavior. Was he abused and running away to safety? Or was it something even worse? Fraser knelt down and became eye level with the boy. ″Are you thirsty, young man?″

The boy met his gaze with large blue eyes. He didn’t speak, but nodded.

″What about hungry? Would you like something to eat?″

The boy licked his lips and nodded again.

Fraser stood up and spoke with Sergeant Rayner. ″Let me take him upstairs. I’ll feed him and get him something to drink before we try to find out who he is and where he belongs.″

Rayner smiled and pushed the half filled-in form in Fraser’s direction. ″He’s all yours, Sergeant Fraser. Good luck.″

The boy suddenly stared up at Fraser. His voice came out soft. ″You’re Sergeant Fraser, Benton Fraser?″

Fraser frowned. How could the boy possibly know his first name? ″I am.″

″Was your father a Mountie, too?″

″He was. Sergeant Robert Fraser.″

The boy finally smiled. ″He knew my mother.″

Chilled, Fraser swallowed hard. ″How did my father know your mother?″

″It’s a secret. I’m not supposed to tell.″

Fraser’s face heated as all curious adult eyes suddenly turned in his direction.

Dear Lord.
