Bird By Bird was a prescribed text in a History subject I took last year and it was a fucking godsend. I'm the kind of person who pours all my self worth into every essay, paper, scrap of writing I do and it nearly kills me every time. That book helped bring me back a little closer to earth. To realize that I am not my essays.
Also, how insane is what's happening over in icymorning land? I'm so angry at all universities in the world right how.

I am not my essays... so true. So fundamentally hard to believe but so TRUE.
And yeah, it's one thing after another with universities at the moment. I feel like I should be getting all wise and philosophical about it but all I keep thinking is "those BASTARDS, how DARE they". I think she's got legal recourse, that guy is way out of line.

This book has helped me so much. The one thing that sticks with me the most is "shitty first drafts." When I can keep that in mind it frees me so much to just write.

Yes and yes and yes.
Also since the first few words are often the hardest, it gives me courage to just start and see what comes out, knowing that it's GOING to be shitty, but it will change later. I cherish that advice... actually I spent a lot of time reading it going - "OMG, YOU KNOW ME!"...
