Too much aint enough, love, to satisfy me

This is about the fourth time I've opened this window in the last week alone, and not posting, but wanting to, you know, reach out into the world and so on. It's not that there's nothing happening, there's TOO MUCH happening. It's like one of those dreams when you want to yell and yell and all that comes out is a tiny breathless squeak ( Read more... )

Aha. I totally have my head up my own ass. Things aren't really so bad, they're just keenly intense, and I'm kind of waving flailing hands and going "stop it world, just for a minute".

How are you, though, my dear?

You do not, silly. The world has dealt you some big blows lately. I would be flailing too if I was you.

I'm bloody fantastic. Sorry!!! We've moved and we're all settled and my job is awesome and Phil's uni is awesome and its so nice for life to be moving forward. We've been working towards this for the last 7 years and damn it feels good.

More Greta! Yayay! *fist pump*

Bird By Bird was a prescribed text in a History subject I took last year and it was a fucking godsend. I'm the kind of person who pours all my self worth into every essay, paper, scrap of writing I do and it nearly kills me every time. That book helped bring me back a little closer to earth. To realize that I am not my essays.

Also, how insane is what's happening over in icymorning land? I'm so angry at all universities in the world right how.

YAY! *hugs you*
I am not my essays... so true. So fundamentally hard to believe but so TRUE.

And yeah, it's one thing after another with universities at the moment. I feel like I should be getting all wise and philosophical about it but all I keep thinking is "those BASTARDS, how DARE they". I think she's got legal recourse, that guy is way out of line.

I LOVE Anne Lamott. She's amazing.

I don't know what I like better, all the really useful hints on writing that she gives, or the admission that all writers are fundamentally nuts, and ways to cope with that insanity. That really struck a chord for me.

Her personal history is amazing too, I love her autobiographical writings an insane amount.

4. I read Anne Lamott's "Bird by Bird." I like her a lot. It's a great book for writers, and people who like to read. I totally recommend it.

This book has helped me so much. The one thing that sticks with me the most is "shitty first drafts." When I can keep that in mind it frees me so much to just write.

Yes and yes and yes.
Also since the first few words are often the hardest, it gives me courage to just start and see what comes out, knowing that it's GOING to be shitty, but it will change later. I cherish that advice... actually I spent a lot of time reading it going - "OMG, YOU KNOW ME!"...
