Disclaimers: It's amusing to me that I can change the names and a few words in this story and then claim that I totally own them.
“Jeff.”
…..
“Jeff.”
….
“Jeff!” Annie finally shouted, causing Jeff to jump a mile in the air. Annie stared at him as he allowed his heart rate to return normal.
“What are you doing?” Annie asked, looking at the study room table, and the papers on it, suspiciously.
“Ummmm…. Nothing,” Jeff tried, wiping the sleep out of his eyes.
Annie took a closer look at the papers on the table, as well as the books. They looked like… school work.
“Are you…. Studying?”
“No…” Jeff lied again, unconvincingly.
“You are! You’re studying!”
“Okay, so I’m studying. Big deal.”
“Yeah, but… you were asleep.”
“Well, studying is boring.”
“But it’s eight in the morning.”
“And?” Jeff tried, but he could tell he was losing. Annie was smart. She could piece things together. He knew it wouldn’t be long before…
“You fell asleep studying!” she shouted triumphantly.
Jeff had to try one last time to save himself. “What!? No. I did not.”
“Yes, you did.” Annie’s voice was teetering dangerously close to ‘I love butterflies’ territory. “Awww! You care so much about your studies that you were studying so late that you fell asleep!” There it was.
“Annie, shut up.”
“That is the sweetest thing….”
“Annie.”
“Wait until Shirley and Chang hear about this.”
“You would NOT tell Shir- wait, why would you tell Chang?”
But Annie wasn’t listening to him anymore. “Do you know what this means? We can be study buddies!”
Jeff cringed at the thought. For one thing, studying. Ew. For another, being Annie’s study buddy… well, that had already happened once with the debate, and…. Yeah.
“Annie, stop.” Jeff tried to interject calmly, but Annie would. Not. Shut. Up. “ANNIE!”
Annie stopped talking, her eyes wide, her lips pursed.
“We are not going to be study buddies.”
In a clear attempt to crack Jeff’s armor, Annie made an impossibly sad face. “Why not? Now that you’re so interested in studying-”
“I’m not!” Jeff jumped to his own defense. “I’m….really not,” he tried again, calmer this time.
“Then why did you fall asleep studying?” she asked, in a sweet tone that clearly said ‘I’ve got you’.
Jeff tried to think of a clever lie. He’d been hypnotized. He’d been framed. Chang made him do it. But in the end, he knew she wouldn’t buy any of those. “It’s just…. I thought this Constitutional Law class was going to be easy, but I’m this close to failing.”
Annie looked confused. “But you were a lawyer. A defense lawyer.”
“Yeah, but I wasn’t exactly defending people’s right to freedom of speech or due process. I was more into defending their right to drive drunk and steal their grandparents’ social security checks.”
Annie’s face fell in a disapproving way, which always made Jeff feel like shit. He couldn’t really explain it, but the way he felt when he disappointed Annie was in the Top 10 Worst Feelings he’d ever had.
But, oddly, Annie’s face perked up quickly. “Well, this is great!”
“Gee, thanks. I’m glad my hardships make you so happy.”
“No, not great that you’re failing. Great that I happened to take that class last semester and that I happened to get an A. I can tutor you! Isn’t that great?”
“Great,” Jeff said weakly. In a way, yeah, it was great, because Jeff really did need help in the class. But help from Annie? Well, again…. Debate.
“This is so awesome. I’m going to make flashcards!”
And then there was that, too.
But Jeff couldn’t help the something or other he didn’t want to define when he looked at Annie and saw how excited she was.
“Okay. Go… make your flashcards.”
Squealing, Annie jumped out of her seat. “This is so great! You’re going to pass this class, I promise you!” And with that she was out of the study room, no doubt to make flashcards and highlighted study guides that were going to drive him nuts.
Jeff prayed that she kept her cardigan over her shoulders this time.
It would be okay, he reasoned. The Debate was just like…
And the prom was…
And the blanket fort was just….
Dammit.
