Raw Video of Philly Gas Main Explosion
Click to viewLast night at about 7:30, PGW (Philadelphia Gas Works) crews and local firemen were trying to repair a leaking high-pressure gas main in the Tacony section of Philadelphia. Shortly after they started something ignited the gas, causing a tremendous explosion which killed one utility worker and injuring five other people, including a firefighter.The fire caused by the explosion went to three alarms and lasted three hours after the blast. The explosion combined with the ensuing fire destroyed one building and heavily damaged another.
Videographer Geoff Nichols was on the scene to document the gas leak for a news broadcast, and caught the moment of the explosion. He describes the moment, saying
“I had my hand on the camera and it almost threw me back,” he said. “There was a split second when everyone was kind of wondering ‘did that just happen,’” Nichols said. “Then some guys just sprung into action.”
