Home again home again!

Mom's flight back from Atlanta was on Monday. On Tuesday, Dad had a flight to San Diego from Atlanta. He'll be in San Diego a total of 10 days. I opted to fly back home with Mom; it's much cooler here in Maine than in California and besides I thought it'd be nice to keep Mom company.

Well from Atlanta to New York, we rode First Class! I watched the puffy clouds out the window, without there being a jet engine in the way. The nice attendant lady brought me coffee too.

We landed in New York with plenty of time to spare for the connecting flight to Portland ME. But we heard the lady on the speaker say they overbooked the flight and that they needed people to give up seats. That's so stupid. I mean, how can they overbook a flight? Can they not say, "Sorry, all full up, how does Tuesday sound instead?" But anyway the lady on the speaker said that if you give up your seat, they'll give you free round trip tickets to anywhere in the country.

"Mom!" I said, tugging on her sleeve, "You could get free tickets to fly to California with Dad!" So we went up to the counter and the lady told us the next flight would be 8:40 AM on Tuesday. I said to Mom, "Cool! We get to see New York City!"

At first we didn't know where we were gonna stay. Dad suggested on the phone that Mom stay in the airport where it's safe, since everyone in that part of the airport had to go through security and all. But then we found out that the airline was also putting us up in a hotel overnight. We didn't even have to take a cab; the hotel had their own shuttle service at the airport.

It was NICE AND COLD in New York. Snow on the ground and a chill in the air. The sun had gone down and Mom and I both wanted to do a little exploring but we had an early flight in the morning. So as much as we wanted to stay up late and catch Letterman (hee hee) we knew we had to stay put in the hotel. So we went to the room--I got my very own bed! It was on the third floor. There was a noisy car alarm outside for a while, and other loud sounds, so Mom turned on the fan in the room to drown out the noise. That's the same thing she does with Dad's snoring, hahaha.

Well I found a menu for a Chinese place and so Mom ordered us some delivery. The New Great Wall in Queens has GREAT crab rangoons, just in case any of you bears out there wanted to know that. The chicken wasn't bad either; Mom ate most of that. Then Mom took a shower while I sent a text to Dad and my friend moodybear. I also took a nice brisk bath in the ice bucket. Mom didn't have a comb because all that stuff was in checked baggage. She didn't have a toothbrush either. But, she told me, sometimes when you're on an adventure you just have to do without the creature comforts. She popped in a piece of gum to clean her teeth, then called Dad for a little while, and then we turned in.

I'm not used to sleeping in a whole big bed all alone, especially when I'm not at home. And I thought maybe Mom would be a little scared, what with sleeping in a hotel in a strange city and all, so I climbed in with her.

Well the next morning, Mom's phone played a little song at 6 AM, so I told her it's time to get up! I got all my stuff together in my backpack, and she did too. Holy morning hair, Mom! LOL! We went down to the lobby and got some juice and muffins. We were gonna take the 6:30 shuttle, but the 6:00 one didn't arrive til 6:15 and we didn't want to have to catch the next one late so we took this one instead. I gotta say, I'm impressed with Mom staying so awake so early in the morning! Well anyway we went through security no problem and had time to call Dad again.

I learned something about getting breakfast at airports. Usually, Mom won't eat McDonalds food, so she got eggs at a place that isn't really so much a breakfast place. The eggs we got were microwaved with yucky fake cheese on them and were gross as could be. I bet McDonalds food at the airport still tastes like McDonalds food everywhere else, so it's a step up from eggs anywhere else in the airport. There was a Dunkin Donuts too. I think it would have been worth waiting in line for Dunkin Donuts food. But you live and learn, right?

We caught the flight home, no sweat, and pretty much collapsed as soon as we came through the door. I'm still pretty sleepy!
