Won't bother getting into the last entry...What's done is done, people have their
own opinions and despite losing what I considered a very good friend, I can take
solace knowing that the highlight of those weekend nights at Adam's house will be
spent badmouthing the terrible people we've become while they sit atop their high
horses self righteously smoking blunt after blunt playing video games. Myself on
the other hand will be out doing what I should have been doing a long time ago,
getting away from that scene and actually being social (which is not hanging out
with the same 5 people every night in a fog arguing over who is getting the next
dutch.) I did find it awfully cute though that your new "ringleader" (which is pathetic
considering who it is and what HE'S all about) called my phone this morning and let it
ring once before hanging up.
My apologies for neglecting this journal, it just seems that with Myspace and Facebook
no one seems to care about good 'ol LJ anymore.
Last night was exactly what I needed...After said argument, Big Mike was kind enough
to pick me up and we headed to Perst's for a much needed get together. It turns out
it was a full fledged party complete with everyone's favorite sport, beer pong. Mike and
myself won our game, and afterwards, chilled with Perst shooting the shit, and I must
thank them for putting things into perspective. No one needs friends who leave at the
first sign of trouble, and like Jake Roberts said, "never trust a snake."
The rest of this entry will deal with my favorite topic, the wonderful world of Mixed
Martial Arts. Lots to cover so here goes:
Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Couture
Around the time Lesnar was signed, Randy Couture shocked the world and defeated Tim
Sylvia for the Heavyweight Championship. Now, we get the matchup a lot of people,
myself included, have been waiting for. Say what you will about Brock, but there is
no better wrestler in the company better than Brock. Combine that with his speed and
power, this quite possibly will be Randy's toughest challenge, and despite his
experience, he has in the past had the most trouble with bigger challengers who he
isn't able to control in the clinch, ground, nor use his own strength in order to
force a takedown. He also is not known for his submissions, which is the only way I
see Lesnar EVER losing. Yes, Brock has only three professional fights, but his skillset
is something that cannot be denied. His explosiveness in order to get the takedown
simply cannot be stopped, and once it gets there, his hands (which use 4X gloves,
larger than any other fighter) basically will mash the face of his opponent even
without full force behind them. While you can never count Randy out of any fight,
I simply do not see Randy being able to win this one, and when all is said and done,
Brock will be your new heavyweight champion, much to the chagrin of the "hardcore"
fans, who refuse to see past the fact that Brock was a former WWE wrestler. Sucks
for them, but they just need to grow up. However, his real test will come against
Antonio Nogueira, who possesses the exact tools (superior juijitsu and unparalelled
submissions) to defeat a relative rookie like Brock.
Quinton Jackson vs. Wanderlei Silva
Hasn't been announced, but this is the hot rumor of the moment as "Rampage's" first
fight back since he was robbed of his championship by the UFC's current posterboy.
Silva looked great his last fight, but as we all know, the Octogon vs. the ring is
VERY different, plus I can't see Rampage coming back unprepared to avenge a loss
against a guy he hates. If he goes back to his old style of fighting (mainly stand up
to set up the ground and pound), I see him taking this by the second round. If he
decides to keep it purely standing, Wanderlei has the power to knock anyone out. I'll
go with Rampage on this one since I feel he still is the rightful Lightheavyweight
Champion, which by the time that happens, will probably be held by Rashaad Evans,
which sets up some perfect black on black crime.
Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote
No need to get in depth on this one. Silva by murder in round one.
Rashaad Evans vs. Forrest Griffin
Honestly, Evans defeating Liddell was not all that much of a shock to me. What did
shock me was how he won. Knockout of the Year? No one could have called that. Throw
in the fact that his wrestling is far superior to Griffin's, I see a very boring
fight as he'll use his wrestling skills to grind out a decision against a guy who
has all the heart in the world, but not the skillset to back it up. On a side note,
Evans has that herky jerky style where you don't know when or where he's going to throw
a punch, which is what knocked Liddell into another dimension. Griffin is simply average standup and on the ground, and without that one leg kick against Rampage,
probably would have been knocked out in the second round.
Antonio Nogeira vs. Frank Mir
Juijitsu vs. Juijitsu. Nogeira's is better, but it'll be hard for him to submit a fellow
Juijitsu specialist. I see it staying more on the feet, where unless Mir lands a haymaker
from hell, he'll be outboxed and maybe even gassed enough for Big Nog to score a submission.
BJ Penn vs. GSP
THE fight of the year, even though it has yet to be announced. ANYONE can win this
fight, but the true winners are the fans. If Penn is in shape for five rounds, this
fight surpasses Griffin/Bonnar 1 as the best fight in history. Even standup, even
groundwork, both with great submissions...Hard to pick a winner, but I'll go with Penn
considering he hasn't looked this good in well, ever. Plus, GSP still has that suspect
chin and Penn's boxing has been getting better and better. The only thing that worries
me about Penn is how his added weight will affect his conditioning, because he MUST
come in shape against GSP, in my opinion the second best pound for pound fighter in
the UFC.
Anyway, those are the major fights coming up, feel free to comment if you disagree.
