Behold! A rambling follow up to:
Doing Stupid Things!
Strangely enough, the project to network my drive went pretty well. Formatting did the trick. It took about fifteen hours to format 1 terabyte (NTFS).
After that, backing up my computer to the drive (now called BATMAN, which goes well with my naming scheme that includes TURNIPSEED and ZIPPY) went less well. After about two days, only half the files were backed up. Mind you, the contents of my hard drive represent more than a decade of information; so I kinda expected it to take some time.
In light of this, I decided to redo the network. The project started off by ripping the modem and router off the wall, which now needs to be repainted. Then a single phone line stretched around to the new networking area for intarwebs - it looks ugly, so I'll probably redo this again. Now it's all on a wired network (where before it was almost exclusively wireless-N).
Backup attempt number two was started this morning, and as I left for work the progress was around 30%.
In short, going to Fry's was actually not a bad idea. Strange, I know. We even went back later and got a copy of the Star Trek Next Generation movies on Blu-ray.
