This ought to be quick, but it probably won't be!

First up, thank you SO much for the host of varied birthday greetings I received for the 30th.

As well as many, many posts, messages and e-mails (congrats to haldoor for being first past the post, living in the future as she does!), I also had a super Old Skool Will picspam from silvershe_wolf, a fantastically scrummy ( Read more... )

It was wonderful, will post about it soon.

Glad to know you weren't personally affected by the earthquake - though thoughts winging their way to those who were. Is your country particularly prone? I don't remember hearing of an NZ EQ before.

NZ gets a LOT of earthquakes as we sit on the edge of two tectonic plates. Our last major one that I recall was in 1987 near Whakatane in the North Island, and of course the most famous one was in 1931 in Napier (also North - they rebuilt the whole town and it had underground power before many other places in NZ, and still, famously, has many many Art Deco style buildings there from the rebuild period).

Auckland, on the other hand, has few earthquakes (we're too far north) although we need to worry more about volcanoes since our city is full of 'em! Thankfully, most are extinct.

Thanks for that, Mrs. H!

That's a very cavalier statement: Thankfully, most are extinct.

May that long remain the case for you :)

Well, none of them have gone off in living memory so we can but hope... although Rangitoto (offshore island) is still only considered dormant. So, if I wake up one morning with ash raining down... I'll probably be the first one to panic! ;-P
