I've just watched the extended versions of:
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
And it all made sense! I haven't read the books, so some of the scenes from the theatrical release left me lost, but now I understand.
I have enjoyed watching The Lord of the Rings trilogy in the theater, but now I enjoy it a lot more. In fact, I've ordered the blu-ray extended versions of the movies as a boxed set.
