Only read this if you don't mind hearing my own thoughts on the Brokeback Mountain phenomenon that is sweeping the movie community by storm. It isn't pretty, we shall say that.
while i haven't actually seen the movie, i am not sure if i entirely agree with your rant.
while i agree with most things you say, i'm not entirely sure it aplies in any way to this movie per se.
at least to my understanding, this movie isn't about being gay, as it is about being in love. and what love itself can mean between any two people...with these two happening to be men.
gay people everywhere get frustrated when you call it the 'gay cowboy movie' since it's more than that. since it's more of a titanic-type of love story when you spell it all out...
now i agree with your phiolosophy of empowerment through struggles and successes... you (may or may not) know that my mom was single handedly responsible for achieving alot of the gay (alternative lifestyle) curiculum that is taught in schools now...and has been for a while. she also understood that you need to be who you are, before being accepted or rejected based on who you are.
however, i believe this movie, if having been played by actual gay characters would have taken away from the story.
this was a story of two people in love, and lost because they weren't supposed to be.
more akin to romeo and juliet, it was a forbidden love. even though they knew it was right.
if it had been two actual real to goodness honest gays, they would have realized and recognized the okayness in their love, and taken it and flown. the struggles wouldn't have been the same. instead of coming to terms with the love they had, they'd be coming to terms with people not accepting the love they had...but who knew, in their hearts was okay and was right.
the thing with gay people is that they know, whether they're beat up or accepted that they are right, and following their true path. (even when they try not to accept it, they know they are denying themselves what they believe is their right path, even if they think it's wrong - biblicially/historically speaking).
the difference in this movie is that they are not gay. and yet they love eachother.
gay comes in many forms, just like love itself.
you can be angry or frustrated that you get represented by the people who would spit on you. but it is a true aspect of a segment of the people you belong too.
to say that to be gay you need to live gay is as wrong as it is to say to be black you need to eat fried chicken and rap.
just because what you represent is what is gay to you, doens't mean you have a hold on the market of same sex love.
know what i mean?
blast me if you wanna. but then come and visit! :) jo
