Dear Trick or Treat Writer

Sep 17, 2021 03:27

First, let me thank you for writing me a story in one of the fandoms we share. I'm excited about all of them. They're listed in alphabetical order, so as not to play favourites.

I'm also greerwatson on AO3.

GENERAL POINTS:

  • I love stories that explore canon more deeply, whether through backstory, or elaborating the setting/history/culture, or exploring people's motivations and personal interactions.

  • I prefer gen. DNW non-canon relationships unless requested. I'm not asking you to ignore canon relationships; but please don't make them the focus of the story. I don't care for anything more than PG-13: explicit sexual detail is definitely a DNW for me.

  • I love casefic; and, more generally, I like stories that are canon-compliant. The general exception to this is ignoring canonical character death if you want. Canon-divergent AUs are also okay. (There may be other specific exceptions.)

  • I'm okay with violence if necessary to the story; but not gore for the sake of gore. On the whole, I prefer not to have characters die in the story; but references to canonical deaths are okay. (I'm fine with having original characters murdered in casefic, and that sort of thing.)

  • I enjoy comedy-being able to recognize the ridiculous when it pops up; also wit and wordplay. Having said that, I totally leave it up to you whether you write a serious or comic story or, for that matter, a serious story with comic interludes.

  • No second-person fic, please. First person is definitely okay for book canons that were written that way by the author. However, I don't generally care for it with TV fandoms. Epistolary fic is fine.

REQUESTS:

These are the same as in my sign-up.

The Charioteer - Mary Renault (Alec Deacon, Sandy Reid, Ralph Lanyon, Laurie Odell, Lucy Odell Straike, Bunny, Aunt Olive) - fan fiction, either Trick or TreatI'd like a seasonal story. Halloween wasn't commonly celebrated in the south of England at the time this book is set. However, if you want to include Halloween, I'm sure you can contrive something plausible. Alternatively, you could write about Guy Fawkes Night (or the lack thereof, in war time). If you prefer not to write holiday fic, an autumn setting would be fine, especially if you work in appropriate wartime references.

Either tricks or treats could have a spooky element, such as ghosts, premonitions, bad dreams, or superstition; or, if you prefer something more realistic, there's the horror of an air raid.

I prefer gen-type plots; but I'm not asking you to ignore canon relationships, since they're integral to the book. However, I don't like anything more than PG-13: explicit sexual detail is definitely a DNW for me. I prefer not to have characters die in the story; but references to canonical deaths are okay. DNW second person fic. Epistolary fic is okay.

DCU Comics (pre-Crisis) (Len Snart, Sam Scudder, Hartley Rathaway, Mark Mardon, Mick Rory, James Jesse) - fan fiction, either Trick or TreatI've read The Flash since Carmine Infantino days, which was a decade or two ago, to say the least. There are obvious differences between the comics then and now, never more so than with the Rogues. My favourite version is the original pre-Crisis line-up.

My preference would be a story about the Rogues interacting with one another. Could be a Halloween story; but not if you don't want to. Perhaps a heist, pre- or post-heist in their safe house, personal time, etc. If you want to include the Flash, I'd prefer (if it's a heist story) that the Rogues manage to escape, with or without the loot. Humour would be great, and very much in character.

If you want, I always saw hints of one-sided Barry/Len in their interactions during this period. My head canon is unrequited feelings on Len's part (which he mostly can't even admit to himself), with the Flash being pretty oblivious.

NOTE that Hartley only came out to Wally after Crisis on Infinite Earths. However (if appropriate to your story), I'd prefer if you retcon him as also gay in this period.

I don't like anything more than PG-13: explicit sexual detail is definitely a DNW for me. DNW the death of any of the canonical characters in the story. DNW second-person fic.

DC's Arrowverse (Leonard Snart, Lisa Snart, Mick Rory, Hartley Rathaway, Mark Mardon, Shawna Baez) - fan fiction, either Trick or TreatPerhaps my biggest regret about The Flash since Season One has been the diminished significance of the various members of Flash's Rogues Gallery. They've always been a distinctive crew; and I'd love to see any or all of them, with or without Flash himself.

My preference would be a story about the Rogues at Halloween. Could be a heist, get-together at Saints and Sinners, personal time, etc. If you want to include Barry, I like ColdFlash (esp. the snarky tease), but would prefer the emphasis to be on character interaction. Humour would be great. (However, if you don't want to work Halloween into the story, that's okay.)

DNW AUs (apart from the Rogues as a group not being TV canon), but feel free to retcon Len's death. I don't like anything more than PG-13: explicit sexual detail is definitely a DNW for me. I prefer not to have characters die in the story; but references to canonical deaths are okay. DNW first or second person fic.

Forever Knight (Don Schanke, Janette DuCharme, Javier Vachon, Screed, Urs, Natalie Lambert, Nick Knight, Feliks Twist, Tracy Vetter, Lucien LaCroix) - fan fiction, either Trick or TreatCasefic is always a treat; and I enjoy ensemble stories, both in terms of the detective story plots and the interplay at the station/morgue. An alternative ensemble might involve vampire characters, set at the Raven. If you prefer to focus on an individual, perhaps family/personal life/backstory (for human characters), or history/backstory (for the vampires). By all means include someone who wasn't nominated if you want. I like all three seasons equally.

Basically, I'm pretty easy on what you write, though my preference is for gen. DNW any rating higher than PG13, please. I prefer not to have requested characters die in the story; but references to canonical deaths are okay. I'm fine with having original characters murdered in casefic, and that sort of thing.

I'm not interested in AUs. However, feel free to ignore "Last Knight" if you want.

Availability: Most of the series is available on DVD, and some episodes are on YouTube. There's a Forever Knight wiki, if you just want to check details.

MASH (TV) (Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce, Charles Emerson Winchester III, Father Francis Mulcahy, Maxwell Klinger, Sherman T. Potter, Walter "Radar" O'Reilly, Sidney Freedman) - fan fiction, either Trick or TreatI'd like something similar to the series, with the focus on the characters at the 4077th, whether on and/or off duty. Could be serious or rib-splitting funny; or a mix of the two (which would certainly be consistent with the range of moods in canon). This is very much an ensemble show, so feel free to include any of the nominated characters.

I prefer canon-compliant gen stories. DNW any pairing involving these characters. DNW anything more than PG13, please. DNW second person. Epistolary fic is fine; but please don't use first person otherwise. Holiday fic is okay.

Availability: Still being shown somewhere on the dial in many markets. There's the Monster M*A*S*H Wiki if you want to check details.

New Tricks (Brian Lane, Esther Lane) - fan fiction, either Trick or Treat I'd like a story about the Lanes. I'm not interested in romance/smut, but in the sort of thing we saw on the show. Their love for each other is obvious, but understated (and often enough unstated). They've been married for many years, had their ups and downs, and know each other's idiosyncrasies by heart. I'm open as to time period-during any season of the series, or backstory, or futurefic after Brian finally leaves UCOS. (Do they really turn private detective?) Feel free to use other characters from the show if you want. Including a current UCOS case is fine as long as there's some significant focus on Brian/Esther.

I don't like anything more than PG13: explicit sexual detail is definitely a DNW for me. I prefer not to have characters die in the story; but references to canonical deaths are okay. DNW AUs or crossovers. DNW second person fic.

Original Work: (Unwilling Superhero Who Just Wants a Quiet Life, Unpowered Reporter who Looks Like Well-Known Super-Powered Character, Superpowered Character on Halloween Annoyed at Passersby Insisting their Costume is Inaccurate, Superhero's Non-Powered Spouse Who Wishes They'd Quit, Ship: Legacy Superhero or Superheroine & Their Super-Powered Parent Who Ought to Retire, Rookie Superhero Strugging to Control His Powers, Protective Sidekick to Superhero Losing his Powers, Non-Powered Liaison for Superhero Team, Closeted Gay Male Superhero or Supervillain Team Member Afraid He's About to be Outed ) - fan fiction, either Trick or TreatAny or all! Mix'n'match. Combine prompts, if that tickles your fancy. Seriously, enjoy yourself.

I prefer gen, and love worldbuilding and character interaction. Nothing more than PG13, please. Maybe a little higher for violence, but no gore. Please keep any romance in the background (e.g established couples, families). DNW sexual activity in the story. I prefer not to have main characters die; but I'm okay with deaths of victims in casefic and the like. DNW first or second person. Holiday fic is fine.

Prehistoric Park: (Suzanne McNabb, Bob Arthur, Nigel Marven) - fan fiction, either Trick or Treat Dinosaurs! Or mammoths, trilobites, or what have you. Obviously, what I'd really like is the resurrection of the series and six more episodes. Realistically, you're writing me fan fiction, so I couldn't expect more than a single time trip and/or a bit back at the park. Your choice of time period, of course; but I would prefer an era that is as-yet-unvisited. Not the near past: my interest counts "past" in the tens (if not hundreds) of millions of years.

Canon-compliant gen, please. DNW any pairing involving the requested characters. I prefer not to have canon characters die in the story; but references to canonical deaths are okay. DNW first- or second-person fic. DNW screenplay or transcription formats.

WKRP in Cincinnati (Andy Travis, Arthur Carlson, Bailey Quarters, Gordon Sims | Venus Flytrap, Jennifer Marlowe, Johnny "Fever" Caravella, Les Nessman, Herb Tarlek) - fan fiction, either Trick or TreatThis is very much an ensemble show, so feel free to include any of the nominated characters. My ideal fic would be something like an actual episode, i.e. exploring their friendships, irritations, rivalries, and basic decency, maybe through shenanigans of some sort at the station.

I prefer canon-compliant gen stories; but I'm fine with the level of flirting you get in canon. I don't like anything more than PG13: explicit sexual detail is definitely a DNW for me. DNW first or second person fic. Holiday fic is fine.

Availability: A number of episodes are available on line.

Yes Minister (Humphrey Appleby, Arnold Robinson, Bernard Woolley, Jim Hacker, Desmond Glazebrook) - fan fiction, either Trick or TreatI'd like something similar to the series, whether it's a tale of mutual political intrigue or just a scene involving one of the requested interacting groups of characters. I particularly love Sir Humphrey's behind-the-scenes string-pulling to get his own way, and the repartee you get when he and the Minister manoeuvre for advantage, with Bernard in the middle. Free to include additional characters from the show.

I prefer canon-compliant gen stories. DNW any pairing involving these characters. DNW anything more than PG13, please. DNW first or second person fic. If you prefer, I'm fine with a story based on Yes Prime Minister instead, since the same characters are involved.

Availability: A number of episodes are available on line.
