So the very first thing that happens in Green Lantern: First Flight is Hal Jordan being inappropriate with Carol Ferris in a workplace setting. Some things will never change, apparently.

Hal is *very* ditzy in First Flight -- which didn't shock me, but that's because I get most of my Hal-knowledge from scans_daily, where they play up his ditzy qualities -- and the old Superfriends cartoon, where he was always creating spatulas and tongs to deal with the bad guys...

It's actually not a bad sequence, even if it starts some part of my brain wanting to call him "Pretty Sailor Green Lantern."

Oh, yes, I too thought that.

but the Weaponers of Qward were one of my favorite bits of the movie. Creepy, alien, totally unimpressed by Sinestro, and their chilly warning that the imperfection in every weapon is its user was a very good line.

Oh, I loved the Weaponers. Sinestro was nothing to them, and he didn't quite know how to deal with their utter indifference.

It is very, very in character for Hal to try to shift boulders with his bare hands to get to a functional ring so he can fight Sinestro (and this after Sinestro has wiped out dozens of far more experienced GLs) and then when that doesn't work to bang on the ultimate source of the Green Energy so hard it breaks open.

He's a test pilot, not an engineer, damnit!

I think the version of Hal Jordan in New Frontier is a better hero than the one in First Flight. I certainly like him better as a *person*.

My usual sum-up of Hal is that in a crisis he's totally That Guy--brave, competent, inspiring, and unwilling to ever give up. (Sometimes also pretty arrogant, depending on the writer and the timing, but he can generally back it up.) Whereas in his personal life he has trouble keeping a job, has the Love Life of Doom, and can be self-absorbed and a jerk, which is why the harrassing Carol thing struck me as unusually obnoxious but not OOC per se. But he's always...how should I word this...always passionate about what he's doing. Not necessarily loud, that's Ollie, but fighting the good fight is important to him. Whereas this guy mostly did all the right things, although I think most Hals of my acquaintance would have been more actively troubled over torturing people (and would have stepped in sooner the first time), but that sense of "Right here, right now, I am going to save lives and stop bad things from happening and YOU ARE NOT GOING TO STOP ME"--I wasn't getting it. Whereas New Frontier guy has that sense of caring in spades, so I totally agree with you about liking him better.
