"I know how we can decide."

Raphael rolled his eyes impatiently. "I already toldja how we should do it, Donnie."

"But your way would make too much noise!" Donatello whispered loudly.

Both Leonardo and Raphael quickly craned their necks around to see if sensei was anywhere nearby, but it seemed he was still in sitting in front of the television. The cold bluish light from the screen reflected off the walls of the little alcove that served as the bedroom.

"The way to do it fair is by letting the oldest one have it first, then the next oldest, then the next--"

"That's not fair!" yelped Michaelangelo retreating from his brothers to the foot of their big mattress, clutching the object in question.

"That's just 'cause you think you're the oldest, Donnie!" hissed Raphael. "And that's only 'cause sensei said you were reading books for older....older...uh..."

"Readers," Donnie finished.

"So you're just an older reader, not a older anything else!"

Leonardo frowned and straightened the blanket over his crossed legs. "Well, it would let everyone get a turn, but it's not for sure that Donnie is the oldest, which, I think I am really, anyway."

Donatello turned and gaped at Leo, stung by the betrayal.

"Well, who says I'm not?" demanded Raphael.

"You're not," said Leo and Don almost in unison.

Mikey tightened his grip on the coveted prize. "I got it first. I get it tonight."

"Mikey, that's really not fair, just 'cause you grabbed it before any of us could, " said Leonardo. "We have to have a fair way to decide."

"I toldja!" Raphael repeated with growing vehemence. "Nage-waza. Winner gets it. We could do best two out of three throws."

"We should draw straws. Like sensei did with the marbles," said Leonardo.

"No! That's stupid!"

"Raph, be quiet!" Donatello glanced uneasily in the direction of the softly murmuring television set.

"Oh! I know!" Leonardo scooted toward Donnie on his knees and held out one fist. "We could do that rock, paper.... rock, paper... what's the other thing?"

"What are you talking about?" Raphael snapped.

"That thing they did in that one movie when they were deciding who was going to do something first."

"What movie was that?" asked Donnie.

"I don't know," Leo shrugged. "Sensei turned it off. But they did this deciding thing--"

"You don't even know what it was." Raphael sank back against the wall, crossing his arms. "You guys never listen to me. I know what we should do."

"We can't spar. That's a dumb idea," said Donnie. "We're supposed to be asleep!"

Raphael surged angrily toward Donatello, his brows knit. "It's not dumb!" Donnie reflexively jumped back.

"Shh-- look!" Leonardo pointed behind Donatello. Michaelangelo lay curled up at the foot of the mattress, eyes fast shut, his arms clasping the brand new, huge, lime-green, faux-fur pillow under him. "Mikey's already asleep."

They all watched him for a moment.

"He's fakin'," Raphael decided.

On cue Michaelangelo rolled over with a soft whimpering sigh, never releasing his fierce hold on the pillow.

"Maybe we should just let him have it," said Leo. "Just tonight."

"Leo!" Raphael and Donatello protested in unison.

"I think we should," said Leo with finality.

Raphael groaned and rolled onto his side, pulling a blanket over him. "Whatever," he mumbled under the blanket.

Donatello sighed. "Okay, I guess we can decide who gets it next tomorrow."

After his three brothers had settled themselves and the blankets in a comfy heap, Michaelangelo rolled over and opened one eye to peek at them. He grinned and then snuggled down in the warm plushy fur of the pillow. With a contented sigh he drifted off to sleep.
