Summary: First bokken kata
Each of his brothers struggled to keep their balance on their short, unsteady legs, to remember all of the kata, and to not drop the bokken. Master spoke to them in turn, gently, but firmly, explaining that each part must be done, and done in the correct order, in the way he had taught them.
When it was his turn he knew that Master would not have to correct him. He had practiced and practiced and knew every part in order. The wooden bokken swished through the air, and he performed the kata exactly as he was supposed to.
He finished and bowed low, flushed with pride, then stood straight, eager for the praise.
His Master gazed at him with an expression he didn't understand. Sensei's head tilted, dark eyes on his student, as he seemed to think for a very long time before saying anything.
"Leonardo," he said at last. "That was well done. But you must hold the blade flat, like this." Master took Leonardo's hands, still grasping the bokken, and adjusted his grip. "When you swing, keep the blade even, flat to the ground. Like so." He moved the wooden blade and his student's hand in a long gentle sweep.
"Yes, sensei," he whispered against a tightened throat. His eyes stung. He hadn't done it right. Not at all.
He scarcely heard Master telling them all that they had done well, and that he was pleased with all of them.
Already his crushed heart was hardening into resolve to do it better next time.
