Writer's Block: It's not easy being green

Sep 19, 2009 23:58

Timely question. What I've done recently is recommitted myself to living responsibly: making more conscious choices about the foods for myself and my family, buying organic and locally whenever possible, what products I use for cleaning (actually what products I *don't* use), not getting lazy about my recycling, and expanding my little organic veggie garden.

It's weird how the concept of "sustainability" has shifted from something I used to have to explain to people to current buzz word. I guess not "weird" so much as "way cool."

I do have concerns though about the efforts of certain companies to "greenwash" their products and simply sell the same old resource-intensive goods with a new label and only slightly modified ingredients.  Big companies like "Whole Foods" use exactly the same business practices as Safeway and Walmart, trucking in processed foods from great distances with labels like "all natural" and "organix" and end up competing with small, local growers.

It's not that hard to make conscious choices that support personal health and a healthier environment, but it does entail paying some attention to what we do. But that's what living consciously is all about, anyway.
